Starbucks is closing about 250 North American coffeehouses while continuing to invest in a warmer coffeehouse experience.
There is a systems lesson in that.
Standardization is useful because it makes operations repeatable. The failure mode is assuming every variable should be normalized.
Some parts of an experience are not noise. They are the value.
The better scaling question is not "what can we standardize?" It is "what must survive the standardization?"
