macOS Update Stuck? 9 Fixes That Actually Work

macOS Update Stuck? 9 Fixes That Actually Work

Few things are more nerve-wracking than a macOS update that freezes mid-install. The progress bar stops moving, the Apple logo just sits there, and you're left wondering whether your Mac will ever finish. Don't force-restart it right away — a hard shutdown during an update can corrupt system files.

Here are 9 fixes that actually work, ordered from safest to deepest.

1. Just wait it out (seriously)

macOS updates often stall at "less than a minute remaining" for 30–60 minutes while unpacking large files in the background. If the fan is quiet and the disk light is calm, give it at least an hour before assuming it's stuck.

2. Check Apple's System Status

Open Apple's System Status page on another device. If Apple's update servers are down or degraded, the download stalls on their end — not yours. Waiting is the only fix here.

3. Free up disk space

A macOS upgrade needs roughly 15–25 GB of free space, and the installer silently refuses to proceed without it. Delete large unused files, empty the Trash, and remove old downloads. Then restart the update.

4. Check your connection

Switch from Wi-Fi to a wired connection if possible, or move closer to the router. A flaky connection can make the installer repeatedly retry the same chunk of the download.

5. Boot into Safe Mode and update from there

Restart your Mac and hold Shift (Intel) or hold the power button and choose Safe Mode (Apple Silicon). Safe Mode loads only essential extensions — background utilities that interfere with updates won't run.

6. Delete the stuck update files

If the installer keeps resuming a corrupted download, clear it: delete the contents of /Library/Updates (keep the folder itself), empty the Trash, restart, and run Software Update again to get a fresh copy.

7. Reset NVRAM/PRAM (Intel Macs)

Shut down, then power on and immediately hold Option + Command + P + R for about 20 seconds. This clears low-level firmware settings that can occasionally block the boot process after an update.

8. Reinstall macOS from Recovery

Boot into macOS Recovery (Command + R on Intel; hold power button on Apple Silicon), choose "Reinstall macOS," and let it repair the installation in place. Your personal data is preserved — this only fixes the system files.

9. Create a fresh admin user and update from there

If one user profile has a corrupted cache or agent, updates can hang. Create a new administrator account in System Settings, sign in as that user, and run the update there.
