Got an HTTP 402 and the x402 payment still fails? Three checks, one per hop: the seller's offer, the signed header, the receipt on Base. Real outputs inside.
If an HTTP 402 answer arrived and your x402 payment still fails, the fault sits in one of three places, in this order: the seller's offer (the 402 answer itself), the signed PAYMENT-SIGNATURE header your client sends back, or the receipt on Base after settlement. Each hop can fail without any error message, and a plain curl shows only the first one. Below, we take the hops one at a time, show what goes wrong silently, and show what our three small paid checks return for each. We ran all of them on 16 October 2026.
