Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle Submission 💸

*# PocketCFO AI: A Private AI Finance Assistant for Freelancers

Built for Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle

💡 What I Built

Freelancers often have to manage invoices, track payments, organize expenses, and prepare financial reports on their own. Many existing tools can be expensive, complicated, or require uploading sensitive financial documents to external services.

PocketCFO AI is a local-first AI finance assistant designed to make bookkeeping simpler for freelancers and independent professionals.

It helps users extract information from invoices, manage invoice records, track income and expenses, monitor outstanding payments, and export financial data for further analysis.

The goal is simple: give freelancers a more accessible way to understand their finances without needing a dedicated finance team.

Who might pay for it?

  • Freelancers managing multiple clients and invoices.
  • Independent consultants tracking payments and expenses.
  • Solo founders who need lightweight financial organization.
  • Small service businesses looking for a simpler bookkeeping workflow.

The application currently runs locally using Streamlit and Ollama.

💻 Code

The project is built around a practical idea: AI-powered financial assistance should be useful, accessible, and privacy-conscious.

🛠️ How I Built It

PocketCFO AI combines open-weight AI with a lightweight Python application.

My stack includes:

  • Python — core application logic.
  • Streamlit — interactive user interface.
  • Ollama — local model inference.
  • Qwen2.5 3B — open-weight language model used for invoice information extraction.
  • SQLite — local financial data storage.
  • PyMuPDF — PDF text extraction.
  • CSV export — portable financial records and reporting.

The workflow is designed to extract useful information from invoice documents, validate the extracted fields, and help users manage invoices and payment records.

I also implemented invoice payment tracking, transaction management, dashboard metrics, and financial reporting workflows.

Rather than building a generic chatbot, I wanted to build something that solves a specific, recurring problem for people who work independently.

🌱 Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Financial information is sensitive. Freelancers should have more control over how their invoices and financial records are processed.

Open-weight AI and local inference make it possible to build tools that can run on a user's own machine instead of requiring every document to be sent to a paid, closed AI API.

For PocketCFO AI, this approach offers several advantages:

  • Privacy and control: Local inference can reduce the need to send financial documents to external AI providers.
  • Cost flexibility: Users can run the model locally without paying a per-request fee to a hosted model API, although local hardware and electricity still have costs.
  • Less vendor lock-in: The model and inference setup can be changed as the project evolves.
  • Customization: Developers can inspect, adapt, and extend the application for different bookkeeping workflows.
  • Accessibility: Open tooling makes it easier for independent developers to experiment with AI-powered products.

Open innovation is not just about making code available. It is about giving builders the freedom to adapt technology to real problems and create products that people can control and improve.

PocketCFO AI is an ongoing project, and the next step is to put it in front of real freelancers, collect feedback, and learn which features are valuable enough that people would actually pay for them.
