Bitwarden changes its app license, but keeps free features

Bitwarden’s next official release will move its App Store, Google Play and browser-store apps to a commercial license, while a GPLv3 version will remain on GitHub.

The commercial code will still be publicly visible—a concrete example of why code availability and open-source licensing are distinct.

What changes for users

Existing users do not need to do anything. Free features will remain available across all editions. Third-party applications that are compatible with Bitwarden will also continue to function normally, and the ability to self-host the software is not affected.

Which new features will be commercially licensed?

Some new features will only be available in the commercial licensed versions. They will mainly concern tools for companies and premium products.

The code will remain public.

The commercial versions of the code will remain publicly visible, while the open source version will continue to exist on GitHub.
