ReactOS has added support to install and run the operating system directly from an NTFS partition after nearly a decade of driver development.
The update enables Windows-compatible partition formatting, though developers caution the alpha-stage feature remains experimental and lacks caching and journaling.
Until now, users have had to rely on older file system types for installation. Now, not only can you install directly to these drives, but the system also has the ability to format them to be compatible with Windows.
This development builds on earlier work done in 2022 on the computer's boot program, which had gained the ability to boot from such discs.
However, the program's creators emphasize that the feature is still in an experimental stage. The new code does not have a cache for faster operation, and security and logging features are still missing. At the same time, the developers warn that there may be hidden bugs that have not yet been discovered.

This improvement is part of the ongoing software development and is not accompanied by a new official release. Version 0.4.16, released in August 2026, remains the last official addition, with the operating system still in its early stages of development.
