One MCP Connection Still Contains Many Product Decisions

A single connector can simplify access to many operations. The product decisions behind those operations still need to be made explicitly.

Quick answer: Treat the connection as infrastructure. For each task, review the selected API, input contract, data destination, pricing and permitted action. Define recovery and outcome checks before execution. A successful sign-in establishes access to the connector, not that every available operation is appropriate for the current request.

Separate the decisions

Imagine an illustrative assistant asked to turn a public article into a short summary. It might need extraction and summarization, but it does not automatically need image generation, storage or publication.

Decision What the reviewer needs
Task The actual requested deliverable
Product Why this API fits the task
Data Which content will reach which service
Cost Current plan and relevant usage unit
Action What execution is permitted
Outcome How the result will be checked

These are proposed application checks, not a claim that a gateway automatically enforces every row.

Keep optional work optional

An agent may discover a service that could improve the result. Discovery is a proposal, not authorization to add a paid step or send additional private material.

Give the workflow a stopping rule when a required decision is unresolved. A useful assistant can explain the missing requirement while completing independent work.

Review the actual result

The task is not complete merely because a tool returned successfully. Check whether extraction produced relevant text, whether the summary follows it and whether the requested artifact was delivered.

Preserve the selected operation and important execution conditions so another reviewer can understand the choice.
