Attending AWS Community Day Sri Lanka 2026 was an incredible experience. As one of the biggest tech events in Sri Lanka, it brought together 500+ attendees, featuring two packed tracks and 26 brilliant speakers.
Here are the key takeaways and lessons I learned from the event:
1. Beyond AI: Creating True Business Value
Whether you are a beginner or someone who has been in the industry for a while, like me, this event was a great reminder that technology encompasses so much more than the constant chatter around AI. That isn't to say AI isn't relevant—it is vital—but focusing on core business outcomes remains paramount.
Oshada delivered a fantastic keynote detailing Brandix's, one of Sri Lanka's largest apparel companies, cloud transformation journey. It offered everything you would expect from the practical aspects of a large-scale migration. While most people focus strictly on technology, Oshada emphasized driving actual business value, offering next-level insights into what boardrooms care about, what end users think, and what truly generates ROI.
2. Architecture and Design Trade-offs
Manoj picked up right where he left off last year, sharing his core design philosophy with a fresh perspective on managing complex design trade-offs. He walked us through his thought process, demonstrating how to craft high-quality designs that balance technical requirements with cost.
Following Manoj, Chameera Dulanga delivered a standout session on "Engineering Trusted AI for Public Sector with Multi-tenant RAG on Amazon S3 Vectors," which provided some excellent insights into architecture and design decisions.
I spent most of my day in the second track area, where Lakindu Hewawasam took things to the next level with "Multi-Tenancy at Scale: Design Decisions That 10x Tenant Management." The technical depth across these sessions was among the best I have ever witnessed.
3. Your AI Agent Has a Wallet
This was a fascinating topic that I hadn't considered from this angle before: "Your AI Agent Has a Wallet: The Future of Agentic Commerce." The talk explored how we can assign secure crypto wallets directly to AI agents.
I learned about Coinbase AgentKit, Agentic Wallets, and the x402 Protocol. The Coinbase Developer Platform enables AI agents to hold secure, on-chain wallets on Base using TEE (Trusted Execution Environment) isolation and programmatic spending limits. Powered by the HTTP 402 protocol, agents can autonomously pay for APIs, datasets, and microservices on demand using USDC.
It was an eye-opening concept. Special thanks to Lahiru Ratnayaka for these valuable insights!
4. Young Talent and Future Stars
I am certain I saw at least one future AWS Hero in the crowd today. Anyone who has been following the AWS Community in Sri Lanka over the last few years has witnessed the massive amount of raw talent emerging from Colombo, especially among the younger generation.
They are bound to carry the Sri Lankan flag high in the years to come.
5. A Vibrant Colombo AWS Community
The Colombo AWS Community continues to reach new heights. We are fortunate to have Manoj Fernando (AWS Hero) pulling everything together, alongside Udara, who has been leading from the front to deliver three major events over the last few years.
The organizing team was filled with familiar faces, operating like a well-oiled machine. Successfully executing an event with 500+ attendees is an awesome achievement.
If you are based in Sri Lanka or around Colombo, you should definitely join the AWS Community—it is the ultimate place to learn, share, and grow. (And, of course, hats off to the many other local tech communities doing awesome work as well!)
Wrapping Up
Because I was spending most of my time in Track 2, I unfortunately missed a few notable sessions, including Lahiru's talk on "The Illusion of Secure Cloud," as well as "The Permission Paradox: Betting Millions on Serverless" by Krishantha Dinesh.
I'm sure those presentations, along with all the others, were amazing.
On my end, I was thrilled to present my talk: Who Watches the Agents? Architecting Observability for Autonomous AI on AWS" My focus was on building awareness around agent observability, specifically leveraging AWS Bedrock AgentCore to provide operational transparency.
Having so many attendees reach out afterward to bounce ideas around showed how relevant this topic is today, and I thoroughly enjoyed every conversation.
