This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend.
What I Built
I built Five Good Things, a small private bot that helps two friends stay emotionally connected through a simple daily practice: sharing five good things that happened during the day.
This project is personal.
My friend is currently living in Ukraine, where daily life is affected by the ongoing war and shelling. We have a habit of telling each other five good things from our day. It's a simple way to notice positive moments, support each other, and stay connected.
But sometimes we can't call, text, or have a proper conversation every day.
So I built a small solution for that.
The bot allows us to submit our five good things whenever we have time. We can then access each other's entries and look back at the past seven days.
It also includes an AI-powered reporting feature: whenever requested, the bot can generate a report or a short summary of the entries, helping us see the bigger picture without having to read every message individually.
Key features
- Submit five positive moments as text.
- Share entries privately with a friend.
- View a rolling seven-day history.
- Automatically remove entries older than seven days.
- Request an AI-generated report or summary at any time.
- Reflect on emotional patterns through personal entries, without treating them as a medical assessment.
The idea isn't to replace real conversations or pretend that everything is fine.
It's simply a way of saying: I'm still here, I care about how your day went, and you don't have to find the time or energy to explain everything right now.

How I Built It
I built the project with AI-assisted development using OpenCode and the Fledge Alpha Free model (fledge-alpha-free).
The application combines a lightweight bot interface, a private shared journal, a seven-day retention mechanism, and an AI-powered reporting feature.
The AI functionality is designed to work on demand: users request a report or summary when they need one, rather than receiving unsolicited psychological interpretations.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation makes it possible to build small, personal tools that address real problems without requiring a large team, significant funding, or complex infrastructure.
This project started with a simple human need rather than a business idea.
Accessible AI development tools helped me turn an existing friendship ritual into something practical that we can use even when circumstances make communication difficult.
I believe some of the most meaningful applications of AI aren't necessarily the biggest or most technically complex ones.
Sometimes, they're just small tools that help us take better care of the people we care about.
