Short answer: A collection-first workflow maintains requests as the artifact; a contract-first workflow maintains the spec and derives the requests. The first is intuitive and drifts; the second is a discipline and stays correct. For a team that already versions an API, the contract is the durable source.

What collection-first optimizes for

Immediacy: you build a request, save it, and run it. There is no upfront modeling. The cost is that the collection is a separate, authored artifact that must be kept in sync with the API by hand.

What contract-first optimizes for

Property Collection-first Contract-first
Source of truth The collection The spec
Upfront cost Low Modeling
Drift Common Rare
Generated surfaces None Requests, docs, mocks, tools

Why the contract scales

One spec drives every surface, so a change is made once and the requests, docs, mocks, and agent tools all reflect it. A collection-first team makes the same change in several places.

The honest tradeoff

Contract-first asks for discipline and modeling up front. It pays back as the surface grows; for a single, stable endpoint, a collection can be the pragmatic choice.

This is part of the Powerduck vs Hoppscotch comparison. Finish with pricing and limits.
