Hi, I'm Kien Nguyen. I'm currently 5th semester student studying Computer Programming & Analysis at Seneca College. This semester, I take OSD600 - Open Source Development as my professional course. This is the first time that I explore this field.
The reason I chose this course is how interesting Open Source is. I can approach many open source software, add features that I think it is beneficial to the users, or modify existing feature that I think it is not convenient for users to use. Otherwise, it is also beneficial to the owner of open source software. The owners may receive new ideas or feedback on their existing project. Open Source encourages the collaboration between the owner and new programmers. Unlike any programming course I taken before, the task was writing code following Professor's instructions. OSD600 would give me a new experience to work on any projects in the world that I feel it is interested to me. Working on Open Source project will solve real problems in the real world.
I'm currently in my home country - Vietnam due to the COVID pandemic. But I will be back to Canada soon. The open source community is worldwide. As I search for #trending open source projects, the results come from every country in the world. Wherever I am right now, I can still work on open source project and discuss with other contributors.
My target for this semester is to effectively contribute to an open source project. Also, working on project like this would consolidate any programming knowledges that I experienced so far (especially C++ because I passionate about it) and open a wide networking for me. I'm currently looking for projects that are helpful to most of the computer users, who are in any fields of work.
While searching for #trending open source project in this month, I found an project that interests me, which is about Cloud File Browser. There are two reasons why I like this concept. Firstly, nowadays, everyone using a computer in whatever work field do need to manage the files they work. This project is helpful to upload, download and modify your files or even execute coding program, which is helpful to programmers, too. Secondly, it is on the Cloud. Cloud makes it easier to access your files anywhere with any machines. As I can see so far, people tend to buy a laptop with minimum storage (128 or 256GB) because they would subscribe to a Cloud storage on their OS. For example, Apple users frequently subscribe for the Cloud storage for only $3.99 monthly to get 200GB or even $12.99 monthly for 2TB. With this Cloud File Browser, users can manage their files conveniently.
