JPEG compression changes the input before an inpainting model sees it. Around text, stickers, and hard edges, repeated saving can create ringing, block boundaries, and color noise. If those artifacts enter the mask, the model may reconstruct the compression pattern instead of the underlying texture.
A compression-aware workflow
- Keep the highest-resolution original.
- Avoid repeated JPEG exports before cleanup.
- Use PNG while iterating when the source contains text, gradients, line art, or transparency.
- Mask the visible overlay plus only the artifact fringe that belongs to it.
- Compare the result at 100% zoom.
- Export JPEG once at the end only when file size matters.
What to inspect
- Ringing: bright or dark outlines near former letters.
- Blocking: 8×8-style tonal steps in smooth areas.
- Chroma bleed: colored haze around high-contrast edges.
- Texture drift: reconstructed grain that is sharper or softer than its surroundings.
AI inpainting is reconstruction, not recovery. It cannot restore hidden original pixels; it predicts a plausible region from the compressed context it receives.
Use this only on images you own or are authorized to edit. Do not remove provenance metadata, legitimate attribution, licensing marks, privacy redactions, or authenticity signals.
