Mailtrap started with a mistake. A staging environment at Railsware sent roughly 10,000 test emails to real customers. The messages were harmless; the gap they exposed wasn't. Teams could send email, but there was nowhere safe to capture and inspect it first. So our engineers built a fake SMTP server for internal use. That tool became Mailtrap in 2011.
We kept building because our customers did. Test email becomes production email, and switching vendors at that point helps no one. Today Mailtrap covers the full email lifecycle: Email Sandbox, Email API/SMTP, Inbound Email, and Email Marketing. Still bootstrapped, still engineer-led
