I am checking out freebsd after allowing too much time between emerge -uavDN operations. The decision maker was zfs on root during install just works. I'm learning about zfs snapshot boot environments right now and will then dive into ports after verifying / getting sound working.
This might be a little more time up-front but have you looked into NixOS?

Love NixOS and already have a secondary installation, but it's not quite as seamlessly compatible with everything as I want for a primary distro.
