GH-300 After the August 2026 Update: Copilot CLI, Agent Mode and MCP Are Now Exam Topics

GH-300 is no longer just a test of whether you can accept inline suggestions. Since Microsoft refreshed the skills list on August 7, 2026, the GitHub Copilot exam names Copilot CLI, agent mode, MCP, sub-agents and organization-level policy controls as tested skills. If your prep material predates that refresh, some of what you study will be missing from it.

What exactly changed in the GH-300 skills list?

Three skill groups picked up changes on August 7, 2026: using Copilot in the IDE, using Copilot features and capabilities, and applying safeguards and troubleshooting. Microsoft labels each change "minor", but the new wording names several features that older courses barely mention.

Here is what the current skills list asks you to do, in plain terms:

  • Copilot CLI. Define it, install it, know its key commands, run it interactively and in sessions, and use it to generate scripts and manage files.
  • Agent workflows. Use Agent Mode, Copilot Edits and MCP. Manage Agent Sessions and delegate tasks to Sub-Agents to keep context usage under control.
  • Collaboration features. Use Copilot for code review, plus Spaces, Spark, pull request summaries, and review standards set through instructions files.
  • Reusable prompts. Reuse prompt files to get consistent Copilot Chat responses.
  • Admin controls. Configure organization-wide policies, enable Copilot Code Review policies, read audit log events, and manage subscriptions through the REST API.

The last group catches individual developers. If you have only used Copilot on a personal plan, you have probably never seen the organization policy screen. The exam expects you to know what lives there.

How are the GH-300 domains weighted?

The exam spreads its questions across six skill areas, and one of them, using Copilot's features, carries the most weight at 25–30%. The other five sit between 10% and 20%, so no area is safe to skip.

Landscape infographic of the six GH-300 exam domains and their weight ranges as of August 2026

Domain Weight
Use GitHub Copilot features 25–30%
Use GitHub Copilot responsibly 15–20%
Understand GitHub Copilot data and architecture 10–15%
Apply prompt engineering and context crafting 10–15%
Improve developer productivity with GitHub Copilot 10–15%
Configure privacy, content exclusions, and safeguards 10–15%

These ranges come straight from Microsoft's GH-300 study guide, which also notes that most questions cover generally available features. Preview features can still show up if they are commonly used, which is one more reason to try agent mode and the CLI yourself instead of reading about them.

Why do the non-coding domains trip up experienced developers?

Between 35% and 50% of the exam weight sits in areas where typing speed and language skill don't help: responsible AI, data and architecture, and privacy controls. Developers who use Copilot every day often lose their points here.

Take the data and architecture domain. It asks you to explain how Copilot builds a prompt from your context, how the proxy filters requests, and what post-processing happens before a suggestion reaches your editor. You can use Copilot for a year without ever needing that mental model.

The privacy domain works the same way. Content exclusions sound simple until a question asks where you set them, who can set them, and what happens to files already open in the editor. The duplication-detection setting (the filter that blocks suggestions matching public code) is another item people know exists but have never switched on.

A useful exercise: for each domain, write one paragraph explaining it to a teammate without opening the docs. Wherever the paragraph goes vague, that's a gap. Checking each gap against a topic-by-topic GH-300 syllabus breakdown shows how deep each objective goes before you move on.

How should you practice the new CLI and agent topics?

Hands-on time beats reading for these topics, because questions often describe a situation and ask what Copilot would do next. Spend at least one session in each of these:

  1. Copilot CLI. Install it, start an interactive session, and ask it to write a small shell script that renames files in a folder. Notice what it asks you to confirm before it runs anything.
  2. Agent mode in the IDE. Give it a multi-file task, such as adding input validation to three endpoints, and watch how it plans, edits and asks for approval.
  3. MCP. Connect one MCP server to your editor and see how it changes what the agent can reach.
  4. Instructions and prompt files. Add a repository instructions file with a review standard, then open a pull request and compare Copilot's review with and without it.

Keep notes on what surprised you. Those surprises map closely to the kind of detail scenario questions test.

What are the exam logistics?

You get 100 minutes, the exam is proctored, and you need a score of 700 or more to pass. It is offered in English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Korean and Japanese, and you book it through Pearson VUE. The price depends on the country where you take it.

If you fail, you can retake it 24 hours after your first attempt. GitHub certifications stay valid for two years, and GitHub is moving to Microsoft's recertification process. Certifications that would expire before that process launches get a six-month extension.

Before booking, Microsoft's free practice assessment and exam sandbox show you the question style and interface. After that, free GH-300 sample questions are a quick way to check whether the responsible-AI and privacy items feel as easy as the feature questions.
