In the whirlwind of AI advancements, OpenAI's ChatGPT has added a novel feature to its arsenal: a code interpreter. This innovation allows ChatGPT to write, execute, and test its own code, marking a new level of automation.

Unveiled to 20 million paying users, this feature promises to revolutionize how we interact with code. It's akin to having a skilled software developer at your beck and call. Data analysts, in particular, can use it to upload files and solve complex math problems efficiently.

Imagine needing to perform a data analysis task. Instead of spending time writing and debugging code, you could describe the task to ChatGPT, and it would handle the rest. This transforms the work of data analysts, freeing them from tedious coding tasks.

Frankly, I do not see this happening as much as it should. New things are unleashed on society, without much thought about how it will affect people and then some time much later, lawmakers try to prevent the worst, often unsuccessfully. Tech companies reap the benefits and society and taxpayers have all the burden.

That goes for smartphones, that goes for social media (false news, hate speech, amplificaton of these intentionally by algorithms, swaying elections by effectively targeting voters via social media, privacy / data protection ...), ChatGPT and other AI, Alexa, Google glasses, new possibilities in manipulating images / videos, de facto monopoly of Google search etc.

Where is the proper risk analysis? It does not have to cripple innovation but it should not be only up to society to fix tech in retrospect to make it less damaging and more human.

The problem is not so much the technology itself but the business model and the way it is implemented.

I once heard from someone that as a society we collectively make sacrifices. This person made an analogy that we could as a society decide to make the speed limit 30 but we don't because we unconsciously decided as a society that we would take that risk associated with the speed limit being 60 or 70. I think the same happens with AI and new technology... we've unconsciously decided that the benefits of new technology such as comfort outweigh any true risk such as data protection.

It's fortunately not that simple for an AI to take over because of a primary issue called context, the other problem is interoperability, to have AI produced code integrate with the vast set of software already created or even have an AI create multiple different types of code that can talk.
Finally, AI's will make mistakes and that can happen at various levels from requirements to business rule code.

Soon we will present a product that I believe can provide an answer to some of these issues.

Thanks Mitchell, we've been working on this product now for 2 years. The base version that we will release does not have AI, but it does lay the groundwork for AI to be incorporated into the Software Development Life Cycle.
We intent to focus on the requirements gathering phase significantly going forward post Version 1 to create something very compelling.
We'll unveil more about the roadmap and what we intend to do early August, I'll be sure to write an article here when we're ready to announce.
