TIL: Reinstalling GBase Database? Check Installation Leftovers First

Reinstalling GBase Database(GBase 8s) only to encounter an "instance already exists" message or another initialization error? Before rerunning the installer, check whether files from the previous installation are still present.

Old installation files, temporary files, and existing instance configuration can interfere with a reinstall. But the right cleanup procedure depends on what remains and how the previous installation was configured.

Here's a safer way to investigate.

1. Check Whether the Old Instance Is Still Running

Before removing anything, inspect the current instance status:

onstat -
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

If the instance is running and you intend to shut it down, use the appropriate shutdown procedure for your environment. For example:

onmode -ky
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Important: onmode -ky shuts down the instance. Use it only when stopping that instance is appropriate, and make sure no active workload depends on it.

2. Inspect the Previous Installation Directory

Check whether the old installation directory still exists:

ls -ld /opt/GBASE/gbase
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Before removing or replacing it, verify that this is the correct path and determine whether it contains files you need to preserve.

Do not assume that deleting the installation directory is always necessary. Confirm the previous installation layout and follow the supported uninstall or cleanup procedure for your GBase Database version.

3. Check for Leftover Temporary Files

Installation and initialization processes may create temporary files under /tmp or another temporary directory.

Inspect relevant files and directories before cleaning them up:

ls -la /tmp
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Remove only files that you can confidently identify as leftovers from the previous installation. Avoid broad deletion commands that could remove unrelated temporary files used by other applications or active database processes.

4. Reinstall After Verifying the Environment

Once the previous installation has been handled and any confirmed leftovers have been cleaned up, retry the installation.

If the same error persists, check the exact error message and the installation logs rather than repeatedly deleting files. The cause may be an existing instance configuration, an incorrect installation path, permissions, or another issue unrelated to temporary files.

TIL Takeaway

When reinstalling GBase Database(GBase 8s), don't assume the latest installation attempt is responsible for every error.

Check the previous instance, inspect the installation directory, and identify relevant temporary files before making changes. Careful cleanup is safer than blindly deleting directories—and it makes the next troubleshooting step much easier.

The rule I follow: verify what is left, confirm what is safe to remove, and only then reinstall.
