Why Involving More Technology Is Crucial to the Trucking Industry

Most truckers struggle with technology when dealing with the strict Hours-of-Service (HOS) rules and operating their Qualcomm systems. Yet drivers need to embrace technology and rely on it more than ever.

The Daily Reality of a Truck Driver

For someone outside the trucking industry, it is hard to imagine how demanding it is to drive a semi-truck with 18 wheels, weighing 80,000 lbs and standing 13.6 ft tall. A person in a personal vehicle can travel relaxed..stop anywhere, anytime, with no mandatory arrival time. They can simply use Waze or Google Maps and enjoy the ride.

Truck drivers, however, cannot use Waze nor Google Maps as it do not support true truck routing: they do not account for weight limits, bridge heights, or hazmat restrictions.

Because of this limited and often insufficient information, drivers frequently struggle to find a truck stop to refuel. After a long day, they must also locate the nearest truck stop or rest area to take the federally required 10-hour DOT sleep break.

A trucker can lose 45 to 75 minutes every day searching for a parking spot. Believe it or not, after 6 p.m. it becomes harder and harder to find safe parking. This number might seem small to outsiders, but the pain is real.

Regulatory Pressures and Added Complexity

  • Truck drivers must follow very inflexible HOS regulations:
  • They cannot be on duty for more than** 14 hours**.
  • They may drive no more than 11 hours.
  • They must take a 30-minute break within those 11 driving hours, followed by a 10-hour rest all of which must be logged through their Qualcomm.

These requirements stack on top of tight delivery windows and strict weight limits. By law, a driver must scale the truck’s weight and distribute it properly across each axle.

In addition, drivers must stop at every weigh station for a truck and load inspection. Inspectors check everything: tire pressure and tread, windshield washer fluid, lights, load weight, engine compartments, and the driver’s HOS records.

As a former truck driver, I have faced and experienced all of this myself.
And all of this stress can be reduced with a single technological approach.

Introducing RigRadar

I created RigRadar to help make life easier for every truck driver.

RigRadar helps drivers pre-plan rest areas, weigh stations, and vetted truck stops along the route between pickup and drop-off,allowing drivers to plan smarter routes and face fewer surprises.

It makes a real difference. Instead of wasting time searching for a nearby truck stop, drivers can rely on RigRadar’s nationwide inventory of truck stops, rest areas, and weigh stations.

The platform provides data based on both the pickup and drop-off locations, so pre-planning stops becomes effortless.

Time Is Money: The Economic Impact

When a driver loses up to 75 minutes every day, they lose an average of $35 to $60 per day, in addition to wasted fuel and delayed ETAs. These delays ripple through the entire supply chain.

With a single technology solution like RigRadar, a driver can not only stop losing money—they can actually earn more:

Drivers can make an extra $14,000 to $19,000 every year.
A fleet with 1,000 or more drivers and trucks can earn up to USD 26.52 million every year.
Across the entire industry, the potential reaches USD 13.26 billion annually, with a savings of up to 92 million gallons of fuel.

The core idea is to give the driver more time value ,turning saved minutes into lower fuel use and extra revenue

The Road Ahead

For truck drivers, embracing technology is no longer optional ,it’s essential. The industry should actively support this shift by offering workshops and training programs that help drivers become more comfortable with modern tools and apps designed for trucking. Learning to use reliable, trucking-specific technology can save hours of wasted time, reduce stress on the road, and ultimately put more money in drivers’ pockets. When both drivers and fleet operators invest in technological know-how, everyone benefits, from safer, more efficient routes to stronger profits across the entire supply chain.

If time is money, we are leaving money on the asphalt.

RigRadar turns lost minutes into miles, revenue, and reliable ETAs.
