Introduction to Firewalls

The use of firewall is very important in the secured networks since it inspect and controls the traffics according to the configured security policy. Serving to differentiate between safe internal networks and risky external networks, a firewall safeguards information from unauthorized persons and threats.

There are many types of firewalls such as the hardware firewall, software firewall and the cloud firewall. Hardware firewalls are those which are hardware based they act as barrier between the network and gateway and other one is software firewall which are inbuilt application in the individual systems. Software-defined firewalls are convenient where an organization has adopted cloud solutions and requires firewalls that can also grow to meet future needs.

A firewall is primarily used for traffic filtering, for prevention of particular content and for permission of only the allowed users of specified devices to certain resources. Firewalls open or close certain data packets with the help of a rule or policy while protecting implementation against several attacks including malware, phishing, and denial-of-service.

Enhancements of the new generation firewalls include IDS – an important system to detect intrusion, VPN support, and DPC – the process of searching threats through deeper analysis of the content of data packets. In addition, next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) which act as the development of traditional firewalls offer advanced features such as application identification and threat identification.

Putting up a firewall should be a necessity for any company or an individual wishing to protect his/her networks. It also means that updates and perhaps even configuration changes must be made frequently since new cyber threats emerge on a regular basis to guarantee the existence of strong counter measures. As the world continues to interconnect it is vital to appreciate and adhere to firewalls if a person or company’s virtual space is to remain safe.
