Where I am currently, I get compensated if I'm on call, quite fairly, and it's not compulsory.

The last time I was on call was the week-and-a-half that a big sports competition was happening (I did the back end of their websites). We had at least one PM, AM, front- and back-end developer and devops on hand until after midnight every day - this was negotiated with the client well ahead of time.

Chatting around the office, quite a few people are on call to varying degrees every week depending on client requirements. Nobody's coerced. We all can take whatever equipment we need with us.

I've been on call in previous jobs, but they never offered any pay for it (except once, when they offered it to me verbally and then said that I didn't get any calls and didn't have any agreement in writing so...).

Sounds like you're in a good situation if being on call is well compensated and optional. :)

Yeah, but personally I don't get the option that often :)
