This is a good overview, but scientific computing isn't just limited to things that require supercomputers or clusters of computers. That is the domain of large data analysis. Scientific computing is using any computing resources of languages to research scientific problems. This happens at a small scale as well.

I'd like to mention "Octave" as a decent tool, as well as "Maxima" for symbolic calculations.
