Most "Free Startup Promotion" Lists Are Wrong (Here's What We Tested)

Every founder eventually searches for ways to promote their startup without spending thousands on ads. Search Google for "free startup promotion sites" and you'll find dozens of articles recommending the same platforms:

  • Product Hunt
  • BetaList
  • Crunchbase
  • AngelList
  • G2
  • AlternativeTo
  • DEV.to
  • Hashnode
  • We've digged down to 50+ Promo sites

At first glance, it looks like there are endless opportunities available, but the problem - most of these articles appear to be repeating information from older lists without verifying whether it's still accurate.

After seeing the same recommendations over and over again...

We decided to test them ourselves

Over the past few days, we reviewed more than 50 startup promotion platforms, analyzed their submission processes, checked whether they were actually free, and documented what founders can realistically expect when submitting their projects today.

MORE THAN A HALF WERE NOT EXISTING ANYMORE, funny thing is that most of the ones live are not what they used to be, some of the findings were quite surprising.

Let's See the Results

Fake Platforms - Promoted as Free & Do-Follow, but Something Else in Reality

It's obv here, these platforms started as such, but change their models over time, but without mentioning it anywhere. The sad reality is that they still get promoted based on information that is years out of date.

Platform Common Claim What We Found
❌BetaList Free submission available Paid plans only during our testing
❌Startups.fyi Free startup submission Free submissions consistently declined during our testing
❌Launched.io Active startup launch platform No longer operating
❌Futurepedia Free AI tool listing Paid submission options only
❌Microlaunch Free launch platform Paid "Go Pro / Launch Now" model
❌Uneed.best Free startup listing Waiting queue exceeds 150+ days
❌Toolify AI Free AI tool submission No longer free
❌There's An AI For That Free AI tool listing No longer free
❌Product Hunt Free dofollow backlink Links are nofollow
❌Crunchbase Free profile with backlink Links are nofollow
❌G2 Free listing Visibility often depends on paid options

The biggest surprise was BetaList.

Nearly every article we found described it as a free startup submission platform. We completed the entire submission process expecting to find a free option somewhere along the way. Instead, we were presented with paid plans at the final step.

Legit Platforms That Your Startup Can Benefit from

Not every recommendation was disappointing. We also found several platforms that still provide genuine value for founders looking to gain visibility, backlinks, or community exposure.

Startup Directories

Startup directories remain the easiest way to get your project listed online. Most require nothing more than a short description, your website URL, and some basic company information.

Platform Free Link Type Notes
StartuPage ✅ Yes ✅ Dofollow Startup discovery directory
AlternativeTo ✅ Yes ✅ Dofollow Great for software & SaaS products
SaaSHub ✅ Yes ✅ Dofollow Popular software comparison platform
Tiny Startups ✅ Yes ✅ Dofollow Startup showcase directory
Turbo0 ✅ Yes ✅ Dofollow Startup listing & discovery
Fazier ✅ Yes ✅ Dofollow Startup launch platform

Cons:

  • You're one listing among thousands
  • Limited engagement
  • Little storytelling opportunity

Self-Publishing Platforms

Unlike directories, self-publishing platforms allow you to tell your own story. You aren't creating a profile page, you're creating content.
These platforms require more work, but they also offer significantly more upside. One useful article can continue generating traffic and visibility long after publication.

Platform Free Link Type
DEV.to ✅ Yes ✅ Dofollow
*Hashnode * ✅ Yes ✅ Dofollow

Editorial Features (Highest Value, Story-Based Exposure)

This was the rarest category we found.
Most platforms either ask you to create a listing or publish your own content. Very few are willing to publish a dedicated article about your startup without charging for placement.

Platform Free Link Type
WebSEO Club ✅ Yes ✅ Dofollow

Will all the “free startup directories” follow the same cycle???

They start off free, attract submissions with dofollow backlinks, build authority, and then slowly shift their model once they’ve grown. What’s left over time often looks very different from what early articles describe.

The Right Way for free and valuable Startup Promotion

That’s why relying on them long-term is unstable at best. The real value doesn’t come from static listings that may change rules later, but from platforms where content actually lives and gets seen.
Self-publishing spaces are the safer bet you can share your work, get discovered, and connect with other builders directly. And when editorial-style opportunities appear, they’re worth using immediately. They’re rare, and they don’t stay open for long.
