The Sunday Table: turning family voice memos into a shared cookbook
What I Built
I built The Sunday Table for my family, especially for preserving my grandfather’s recipes and the stories that go with them.
Family recipes are often passed down by conversation: a voice memo, a quick note about what to add, or a memory from around the table. Those details can be easy to lose. The Sunday Table brings voice recordings, recipes, photos, and family stories together in one cookbook.
You can record or upload a voice memo, add a transcript or notes manually, create a recipe from it, and keep the recording linked to the recipe. Family members can also contribute stories and photos. The book can be customized and printed.

How I Built It
The app uses a Node.js server and a browser-based interface. It supports local collections and an optional shared family collection protected by a shared passphrase.
I did not use an AI model, automatic transcription, or an external speech service in this version. Transcripts and recipe details are entered manually. That keeps this version focused on collecting and sharing family memories, while leaving automatic transcription as a possible future feature.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
This version is built with an inspectable, open-source stack and standard browser features, so the project can be run and changed without depending on a closed speech or AI API. That keeps the current app straightforward to host and lets others inspect how family data is handled.
I haven’t yet added open-source AI, so this project does not meet the challenge’s open-source-AI requirement.
