Is Ontario's New Eye Gaming Market Delayed?

The most recent report from Ontario is that the highly anticipated open eye gaming market for private operators could be delayed. According to the report, the delay could see the launch of a new regime in mid-February, so it will miss this year's Grey Cup or even the next Super Bowl. Therefore, gamblers will have to keep betting on local platforms.

Ontario's original plan was to launch a new competitive market before the end of the year, but it didn't go as planned. There has been a lot of interest in the market among the continent's top brands who believe the area could be one of the largest jurisdictions for mobile sports betting.

Now, according to an emerging report, Ontario's gaming regulator is expected to delay the launch of new markets. This is due to bureaucratic obstacles to the final determination of the conditions and structure of the model. The official launch could arrive in mid-February, and thus miss the Super Bowl, one of the continent's biggest sporting events.

The two anonymous sources argue that the policy remains unsolved around issues such as game conditions, data management and security needs, prolonging the start of the new iGaming model, and the delay also creates uncertainty for operators who want to apply for positions and invest in the market.

Justice Department spokesman Brian Gray declined to provide a specific timeline for the launch of the new market, but he was confident the government was continuing its efforts internally with potential operators. IGaming Ontario and game brands will be ready for the new system.

Currently, regulated online betting in the province is only available through the mobile platform of Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, a crown agency overseeing land gambling, but for online betting, the responsibility has been placed on the newly formed organization iGaming Ontario.

News of the delay came shortly after Bonnie Lysyk, the provincial auditor, delivered a verdict on the new iGaming model. Her office released a report. She raised concerns about ensuring the integrity and fairness of the game to be delivered with the new operator.

One of Ontario's leading game brands seeking to launch in the newly regulated private business market is FansUnite, which even applied for a license with the Liquor Game Commission last month, but if the game leader is approved, it is highly competitive and it is unclear whether it will be able to receive such a license.
