Salesforce Apex Testing: What Developers Should Test Before Deployment

Writing Apex that works in a developer org is only one part of Salesforce development. Before deployment, developers should also verify that the code behaves correctly with different data and business scenarios.

Good tests help catch problems before they affect production users.

Test More Than the Happy Path

A common mistake is testing only the expected scenario.

For example, if an Apex method creates a Case when a condition is met, also test what happens when:

The required data is missing
The condition is false
Multiple records are processed
Related records do not exist
An unexpected value is provided

This gives the code a more realistic test.

Test Bulk Data

Salesforce processes many operations in bulk, so Apex tests should not focus only on one record.

Create multiple test records and verify that the code handles them correctly.

This can also expose problems such as SOQL or DML operations being placed inside loops.

Use Test Data

Tests should create the data they need instead of depending on existing production records.

This makes tests more predictable and easier to maintain.

Keep test data focused on the scenario being tested. There is usually no need to create hundreds of unrelated records just to test one method.

Test Errors Too

Error handling should also be tested.

If the code is expected to reject invalid data or handle an exception, create a test scenario for that behavior.

A test should verify not only that valid operations succeed, but also that invalid situations are handled as designed.

Keep Tests Easy to Understand

A test class should make it clear:

Given → When → Then

For example:

Given: Create an Account and related Contact.
When: Execute the Apex method.
Then: Verify that the expected result was produced.

Clear tests are easier for another developer to understand when the code changes later.

Final Thought

Apex testing is not simply a deployment requirement. It is a way to check whether business logic behaves correctly under different conditions.

Test realistic data, bulk scenarios, expected results, and failure cases before moving custom Apex into production.

For teams working on larger Salesforce development projects, Salesforce development services can support Apex development, testing, and deployment planning.
