I don't think there's a wrong point of view here. There's nothing wrong with wanting to learn how something works "inside" as there's nothing wrong with using a web service.
Just keep in mind that we're in the business of solving problems, which means that starting from scratch everytime might not be in the best interests of the customer ;-)
