I do mentoring on a volunteer basis as time allows. I usually let people know either via Twitter or in my local tech community's Slack channel.

I also organize the volunteers for a tech conference called Stir Trek (stirtrek.com) and am part of their board (also a volunteer role) who helps plan the conference overall.

There are events called GiveCamps (givecamp.org/cookbook/) and GiveBackHack (givebackhack.com/) that can help you put your coding to use for non-profits or social good. There are also civic hacking groups where you can volunteer your coding skills to help cities and government initiatives. There's also the International Space Apps Challenge and other hackathons where you can volunteer to help solve problems or help organize those events to help others solve problems.

I also just did my first pull request on docs.microsoft.com and may end up volunteering some of my time to make open source docs a bit better.

I love volunteer work because:

  • It helps to build, grow, and sustain a tech community.
  • It helps you as an individual to showcase your own talents.
  • It could also help inspire you to learn new technologies as you get involved in projects.
