CQRS Architecture: Optimizing Database Performance with Read/Write Separation

CQRS: Separating Reads from Writes for Performance & Scalability

CQRS solves the tension between optimizing databases for writes (normalized) vs reads (denormalized).

Core Idea

Instead of one database:

  • Write Model: Normalized DB optimized for transactions (ACID)
  • Read Models: Denormalized DBs optimized for queries (eventual consistency)

This separation allows:

  • ✅ 10-100x faster read queries
  • ✅ Independent scaling of reads and writes
  • ✅ Purpose-built data models
  • ✅ Easier testing and maintenance

Use Cases

  • E-commerce search (reads >> writes)
  • Analytics and reporting
  • Content management systems
  • Real-time dashboards

The tradeoff: managing eventual consistency between models.
