Designing GBase 8a Cluster Topology: Node Roles Before Installation

A distributed database deployment is an infrastructure design exercise before it becomes an installation task. For GBase 8a MPP Cluster, planning coordinator, data, and cluster-management roles in advance helps prevent avoidable configuration and registration problems.

The key is to map responsibilities to real hosts before generating installation configuration.

1. Understand the Main Roles

A GBase 8a cluster configuration may distinguish among these roles:

  • Coordinator: Receives SQL requests and coordinates distributed query execution.
  • Data node: Stores data and participates in query processing.
  • GCware: Supports cluster metadata and coordination functions.

The precise role requirements and supported combinations depend on the GBase 8a release and deployment architecture. A host may support multiple roles in some topologies, but role overlap should be intentional rather than accidental.

2. Create a Host Inventory

Before installation, prepare a source-of-truth inventory:

Host Coordinator Data node GCware Planned Node ID
db-node-01 Yes Yes Yes Verify
db-node-02 Yes Yes Yes Verify
db-node-03 Yes Yes Yes Verify
db-node-04 No Yes No Verify

This is an illustrative topology, not a recommended production design. Determine the actual number of nodes and role placement using the release documentation and workload requirements.

3. Validate Name Resolution and Reachability

On each relevant host, verify hostname resolution:

getent hosts db-node-01
getent hosts db-node-02
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Check that the resolved addresses correspond to the intended servers. If installation requires remote SSH access, validate that access through the approved administrative account.

A topology file cannot compensate for incorrect DNS, duplicate addresses, or inaccessible hosts.

4. Review the Installation Options

A GBase 8a options file may contain fields such as coordinateHost, dataHost, and gcwareHost.

For example:

coordinateHost = <coordinator-host-list>
dataHost = <data-host-list>
gcwareHost = <gcware-host-list>
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

These placeholders illustrate the role mapping only. Follow the exact syntax, host-list format, and Node ID rules supported by the target release. Do not assume that a Node ID can always be derived from an IP address.

5. Validate the Design Before Installation

Review the inventory for:

  • Hosts assigned to unintended roles.
  • Inconsistent IP addresses or hostnames.
  • Duplicate or invalid identifiers.
  • Missing management or data hosts.
  • Resource and network constraints.
  • Any unsupported role combinations.

Conclusion

A well-planned GBase 8a database topology reduces installation ambiguity and makes later maintenance easier. Mapping node roles, validating host identities, and reviewing the topology before installation are low-cost steps that can prevent expensive deployment failures.
