GBase Database Observability: Combining SQL Diagnostics, Infrastructure Metrics, and Cluster Health

Database monitoring becomes more useful when it explains why a system behaves abnormally, not merely whether a metric exceeds a threshold.

For GBase Database environments, effective observability should connect SQL performance, database activity, operating-system resources, and distributed cluster health.

1. Monitor the Operating System

Basic Linux commands provide a useful starting point.

uptime
free -m
df -h
iostat -xz 1 5
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

These measurements help identify CPU pressure, memory utilization, filesystem capacity, and storage latency.

2. Monitor GBase 8s Activity

For GBase 8s, administrators can use:

onstat -
onstat -g ses
onstat -g sql
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

These commands provide different views of instance and workload activity, subject to release support.

3. Monitor GBase 8a Cluster Health

For supported GBase 8a MPP Cluster deployments:

gcadmin showcluster
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Cluster-level information should be correlated with node-level resource metrics.

4. Define Useful Performance Indicators

Metric Why it matters
Query latency Reveals application-facing performance
Throughput Measures workload processing
Active sessions Indicates concurrency
CPU utilization Helps identify compute pressure
Storage latency Reveals I/O constraints
Cluster health Tracks distributed service status
Error rate Highlights abnormal operations

5. Establish Alerting Rules

Avoid creating alerts based on a single metric without context.

For example, high CPU usage may be normal during a scheduled analytical workload. An alert becomes more meaningful when CPU pressure coincides with increased query latency and application timeouts.

6. Build an Investigation Timeline

When an incident occurs, correlate:

  1. Application error timestamps.
  2. SQL execution measurements.
  3. Database diagnostic output.
  4. Operating-system metrics.
  5. Cluster events.
  6. Recent configuration changes.

Conclusion

GBase Database observability should connect infrastructure, database activity, and application behavior. This unified view helps teams identify performance bottlenecks more accurately and make operational decisions based on evidence.
