What I Built

Meet AquaDrop — a hydration reminder application designed to help people build a consistent water-drinking habit.

We all know the feeling. You're deep into coding, studying for an exam, or working on a project. Hours pass, your tasks pile up, and somewhere along the way, you forget to drink water.

AquaDrop is designed to make hydration reminders simple, friendly, and accessible, with reminder controls and light, dark, and system themes.

For this week's Ghost in the Machine theme, I imagined taking AquaDrop one step further: introducing Ghost Mode, a friendly AI companion that lives on your desktop and reminds you to take a sip when you get too absorbed in your work.

Imagine a little water-droplet ghost appearing on your screen:

"Still debugging? Even your water bottle is waiting for an update. Take a sip! 👻💧"

The idea is simple: technology should help us take care of ourselves, not just keep us productive.

I want to keep AquaDrop approachable, lightweight, and open to future improvements from the developer community.

How I Built It

The existing AquaDrop project focuses on practical hydration reminders, reminder controls, and a clean user experience.

For the Ghost in the Machine challenge, my planned extension is a locally powered AI companion.

The proposed architecture includes:

The local model would generate contextual reminder messages based on information the user chooses to provide. The application would continue to handle reminder scheduling, hydration tracking, and progress calculations using deterministic code.

For example:

  • Coding mode: "Your code needs debugging. Your hydration does too."
  • Focus mode: "Pause for a moment. Take a few sips and get back to it."
  • Late-night mode: "The bugs can wait. Your water bottle has been waiting long enough."

The goal is to make hydration reminders feel less robotic without sending personal routines to an external AI service.

Implementation status: The local AI integration and Ghost Mode are planned extensions, not claims about features already implemented in the existing repository.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

A hydration application does not need to send every interaction to a remote AI service.

With a suitable open-weight model running locally, AquaDrop could generate personalized reminders while keeping user-provided hydration history and work routines on the user's own device.

Open innovation matters to this project for four reasons.

1. Privacy by design

Personal routines should not need to leave a user's computer just to generate a friendly reminder. Local inference can keep the AI interaction on-device.

2. Offline capability

After the model and application have been installed, the AI component can work without an internet connection, provided the local runtime and required resources are available.

3. Freedom to experiment

Developers can change prompts, compare compatible models, and customize the experience without depending entirely on one proprietary AI API.

4. Control over costs

Local inference avoids per-request charges from hosted AI providers, although hardware, electricity, storage, and development still have costs.

A conventional reminder tells you when to drink water. A locally powered AI companion could also make the reminder feel relevant to what you're doing.

The important distinction is that AI should enhance the experience, not make simple hydration calculations unnecessarily complicated.

The Spirit of It

Not every ghost needs a haunted house.

Some ghosts live quietly inside our machines, reminding us of the small things we forget while chasing bigger goals.

AquaDrop gives that ghost a purpose: helping people remember to care for themselves while they learn, work, and build.

Because productivity is not just about how long you can stay focused. It is also about taking care of the person behind the keyboard.

Stay hydrated. Keep building. Let the ghost remind you. 👻💧
