About smartmatch, I am like you: when I came to Perl, it already existed and I always knew it deprecated. I wonder why a thing deprecated since ten years (?) and globally considered as bad by everybody cannot be removed. Anyway, I have production code with smartmatch operators because in some cases it seemed handy and the tempration was too strong. Can't remember if I used a replacement, since many of them exist on CPAN.
