Doing this with no SVG and no images is the hard mode version, I reckon, and that's what makes it so impressive. Anyone can drop in a picture. Building a recognisable Doraemon out of border-radius values and gradients means you actually have to understand the shapes first.
The spinning bamboo copter is a lovely touch too.
Tell your brother he did a great job. An apple after school and Doraemon on TV is a very specific kind of comfort, and it comes through. It takes me back to the years when my head was full of simple things, and I worried a lot less about shipped code breaking production. π
