Nvidia's $250B OpenAI Backstop: Credit Shell Game

When Your Customer Can't Get a Loan, Become Their Bank

Nvidia is negotiating a $250 billion financial guarantee to help OpenAI build a 10-gigawatt data center campus in Piketon, Ohio — a project that could cost over $500 billion total. The backstop would let OpenAI raise construction and lease debt on the strength of Nvidia's AA/Aa2 credit rating, since OpenAI itself has no investment-grade rating and is losing $14 billion in 2026 on $25 billion in revenue.

This isn't generosity. It's vertical integration disguised as financing. Nvidia is also separately negotiating to fund OpenAI's chip purchases — a figure that could hit $350 billion. The pattern is clear: Nvidia guarantees the lease, OpenAI raises debt cheaply, builds the data center, and buys Nvidia GPUs with the proceeds. Nvidia takes a revenue share if compute rentals exceed the floor price, and buys the capacity itself if they don't. The lenders get Nvidia's balance sheet as collateral, not OpenAI's bleeding income statement.
