The site's "Miles Traveled" total went from about 91,000 to about 44,000.

What we cleaned up

  • Most false finds came from batches of tags scanned one after another during setup. The rest were our own test scans and visits from automated link checkers that opened shared tag links.
  • Each false find added a leg to its duck's journey. Some later scans had been measured from those false locations, so we re-measured them from the duck's previous real position.
  • The removed finds had earned no points. All of them were made while signed out, and signed-out scans earn none. We also rechecked one owner's mileage badge against the corrected miles.

What's new

  • Tap "I found it!" to log a find. Scanning a tag opens a page for that duck. Link previews and link checkers only load the page, so they log nothing. The scanner in the DuckyTrack app logs a find as soon as it reads the tag. In Cruise Mode, it saves finds on your phone until you tap "Go Online & Log My Finds".
  • Legs faster than 650 mph score zero miles. That is a little over airliner cruising speed. Each leg is timed from the duck's last sighting, or from its release for a first find. The find still counts.
  • Sharing your location pins only the find you just logged. The map button appears right after your find and works for 30 minutes.
  • Following a duck by email now takes a confirmation. We email you one link. Open it and tap "Yes, email me" to start updates. Your follow then counts on the Most Followed board. Every follower email now ends with an unsubscribe link, and existing email follows keep working.
  • The QR code on your tag's download page is now made by DuckyTrack, so your tag's private link stays on DuckyTrack.

Tips for duck owners

  • Share your duck's journey page and keep the tag link for finders. Anyone who has the link inside your QR or NFC tag can log a find with it.
  • To test a tag, scan it outside the DuckyTrack app and close the page without tapping the button.
  • Tap "I released this duck" on its journey page at the spot where you set it loose, and share your location. That pins where the journey starts. The first find's miles count from that pin, or from your last check-in if the duck has one. The first find by someone else sets the release date and hides the link.

Keeping the leaderboards fair

Every duck's journey page already shows the corrected finds and miles, and so do the leaderboards that rank them.

If a find on any duck looks wrong, tap "Report this duck" on its journey page and choose "Fake finds / cheating". Your report goes to our support team, and you can send one without an account.

Thanks for releasing, finding and following ducks with us. Every find you log puts the duck's newest stop on its map.
