Quickshot Extension

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle Submission 💸

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle

What I Built

QuickShot Extension — a browser extension that captures webpage screenshots or selected UI elements and uses local open-source AI to instantly draft product copy, listing descriptions, or social media blurbs directly inside your browser.

It solves a daily pain point for content creators, indie hackers, and e-commerce sellers who spend hours typing repetitive product descriptions or paying monthly SaaS fees for cloud copywriting assistants. QuickShot keeps content generation fast, offline-first, and completely free of recurring subscription costs.

How I Built It

QuickShot Extension is built with a privacy-first, local-inference workflow:

  • Frontend & Browser Core: Built as a Web Extension (JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, CSS) to handle page capture and element selection.
  • Local AI Engine: Powered by open-weight models (like Gemma / Llama 3.2 running via Ollama or WebLLM) to perform fast, on-device text generation directly from page context without sending text to cloud servers.
  • Structured Outputs: Uses lightweight JSON schema formatting to quickly convert page inputs into clean, ready-to-copy marketing bullet points and summaries.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

  1. 100% Privacy & Security: Unreleased draft web pages, personal projects, and internal tools never leave your local browser session or machine.
  2. Zero API Cost Overhead: SaaS writing tools charge $15–$30/month. Open innovation allows building a light utility with $0 running costs per prompt.
  3. Offline Reliability: Works completely without an active internet connection, avoiding service downtime or API price lock-in.

My First User

Tested with a friend who writes listing drafts for digital products and indie web tools.

  • Feedback: "Being able to select an area on my staging site and get candidate headline copy without opening another tab or copy-pasting back and forth saved a ton of friction."
  • Next Steps: Requested a one-click button to directly copy generated text into the system clipboard.
