I've been comparing React data grids recently, and three options keep coming up: ReExt, AG Grid, and MUI Data Grid.
They overlap in functionality, but their approaches are quite different.
ReExt
ReExt allows React applications to use Sencha Ext JS components.
That means you can work with components such as grids, forms, charts, and pivot tables while keeping React as part of the application architecture.
It also supports customization, responsive layouts, and large-data scenarios.
AG Grid
AG Grid is more focused specifically on advanced data-grid functionality.
Some of the capabilities that stand out are:
Large dataset handling
Virtualization and lazy loading
Grouping
Tree data
Master-detail layouts
Custom cell renderers
Inline editing
Excel export
Pivot functionality
MUI Data Grid
MUI Data Grid is particularly interesting if you're already using Material UI.
It provides common grid functionality such as sorting, filtering, pagination, and column controls while following the Material UI design system. It also includes accessibility-oriented features such as keyboard navigation and screen-reader support.
What I'd test before choosing
I wouldn't make the decision based only on a feature checklist.
I'd build a small proof of concept and test:
Real production-sized datasets
Scrolling performance
Complex cell rendering
Sorting and filtering
Editing
Responsive behavior
Accessibility
Bundle and integration requirements
Licensing requirements
One thing I think developers sometimes overlook is the existing ecosystem.
If your application already relies heavily on Material UI, MUI Data Grid may fit naturally. If the grid itself is a major part of the application, a specialized grid can make more sense. If you're already working with Ext JS components, ReExt provides a different integration path.
Which React data grid are you using right now, and what has your experience been like?
