And with that in mind I prefer not to get "locked in" and have full freedom of choice. I guess it all boils down to your local circumstances when it comes to these kinds of benefits.
Your gym example illustrates nicely why I, too, held on to my own subscription . One company I worked at had a gym around the corner to the office. But I'm not one for working out before or immediately after work, so the local gym in my home town was still a better fit.
Other than what was already mentioned, team building activities are also high up on my list. Working is mostly about the people, so connecting with coworkers is key imo.
