Can AI produce autonomous consciousness?

Image description

The current consensus among scientists and AI experts is that AI cannot develop subjective experiences and self-awareness in the same manner humans do. While AI systems can perform complex tasks and simulate aspects of human thought, the inner state of consciousness, which includes self-awareness, emotions, and subjective experiences—or what is known as "qualia"—is inherently tied to living beings.
Subjective experiences and self-awareness entail more than just processing information and responding to stimuli; they involve an internal perspective that is deeply rooted in human biological and neurological composition. As such, consciousness is often regarded as a phenomenon that might not be replicable in artificial systems, as they lack the biological framework that produces conscious experiences in humans.
While AI can mimic certain behaviors and even learning processes associated with consciousness, such as improving performance over time or making decisions independently, these actions are the result of programmed algorithms and data processing, not a genuine internal experience or awareness.
Moreover, consciousness and subjective experience remain partially undefined even within the realms of psychology and neuroscience. Without a full understanding of how consciousness arises in humans, replicating it in machines remains speculative and theoretical. However, advancements in AI do continue to spark debates and philosophical questions about the nature of consciousness and the possibility of artificial sentience in the future.
