Ghost in the Machine: Summoning Cyber-Horrors with Open-Source AI (Google Gemma & Meta Llama) - Pumpkin Lover Edition

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Ghost in the Machine Submission 👻🌼

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine

What I Built

For Halloween 2026, I built Ghost in the Machine (Pumpkin Lover Edition) — an atmospheric, cyber-gothic haunted terminal that summons eerie 2-to-3 sentence micro-horror stories directly from possessed open-source neural weights.

As an avid pumpkin lover, I infused this challenge with my own creative signature: blending retro computing lore, haunted smart-farm folklore, and chilling Jack-o'-lantern tales.

Key Features:

  • ⚡ Open-Source AI Inference: Seamlessly summons creative micro-stories powered by Google Gemma 2 (9B) and Meta Llama 3.1 (8B) via sub-second Groq inference.
  • 🎃 Pumpkin Lover Signature Lore: Unique folklore including 3:14 AM pumpkin soup apparitions, immortal blood-drinking gourds, and IoT pumpkin patch root breaches.
  • 📻 Procedural Web Audio Synth Jukebox: Real-time in-browser music synthesizer recreating John Carpenter's 1978 Halloween theme, a D-minor Cursed Music Box, and Catacomb Pipe Organ (0kb external audio files!).
  • 🖥️ Instant Reactive Terminal: Authentic CRT scanlines, screen curvature vignette, typewriter text effect, and 4 dynamic theme color shifts (Pumpkin Orange, Cyber Green, Blood Red, Singularity Purple).
  • 🕯️ Offline Zero-Internet Resilience: 100% functional when the lights and internet go out on Halloween night via an onboard curated engine.

How I Built It

  1. Open-Source AI Models:
    • Google Gemma 2 (9B) & Meta Llama 3.1 (8B) for sharp, terrifying micro-prose.
    • Built-in fallback engine ensuring the app is never broken by rate limits or lack of an API key.
  2. Frontend Architecture: React 19, Vite, and Tailwind CSS v4 for sub-second builds.
  3. Web Audio Synthesis: Custom oscillators and biquad filters producing polyphonic horror drones, 5/4 Carpenter arpeggios, and speech synthesis voice narration.
  4. Bento Grid Architecture: Responsive modern showcase highlighting the open innovation principles behind the build.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation is why this project could be built in a single afternoon without friction:

  • Works with the Lights & Internet Off: Closed models lock you behind payment walls and servers that fail during power outages. Open-weight architectures empower software that runs anywhere, anytime, completely offline.
  • Privacy & Sovereignty: Personal reflections and creative folklore remain strictly on the client, never harvested for ad tracking.
  • Zero Cost & Creative Freedom: Empowers students and independent creators worldwide to build rich AI experiences without a credit card.

The Spirit of It

The moment that gave me chills was watching the typewriter effect slowly spell out a story generated in a dark room with the synthesized Carpenter theme humming through my headphones:

"As a certified pumpkin lover, I simmered a pot of spiced pumpkin soup before bed. At 3:14 AM, the lid clattered open on its own, and the pumpkin chunks arranged into a grinning Jack-o'-lantern that hissed: 'You have devoured our kind for years... tonight, we feast on you.'"

Hearing the deep pitched cursed voice read those words made the "Ghost in the Machine" truly come alive.
