What Happens After the First Image in an Anime AI App

Find out how far an anime AI app can take you on mobile, from the first prompt to a refined, reusable piece of anime art, in this hands-on test.


There's an old saying among photographers that the best camera is the one in your pocket, and it's true for anime creators, too. A character might pop into your head on a train or ten minutes before bed, and whether it becomes more than an idea depends on what you can do in that moment. Sometimes the starting point is already saved on your phone, like a screenshot or a photo of a rough sketch.

An anime AI app can turn that idea into an image in seconds. But nearly every AI image generator app has a mobile version now, and the sample images in app store listings only show that the model can draw. They don't say much about what happens after the first generation, like switching models, adding a reference, fixing one detail, or picking up an image you made days ago.

A useful app does more than shrink a desktop page onto a smaller screen. So the real question is how far a mobile anime AI generator lets you take your artwork without leaving your phone.

To find out, we tested the PixAI app, an anime-focused AI art platform. Using only a phone, we created Yuzu, a street photographer with a black-and-blonde undercut, a yellow raincoat, a crescent moon tattoo, and a camera she never puts down.

What Makes a Good Anime AI App for Mobile Creators?

A visually stunning first image doesn't make an app a useful creative tool. What counts is everything around that image, from how quickly you get there to whether you can keep working on it later. Let's explore six factors to check before you settle on an anime AI app.

Fast Anime Image Generation on Your Phone

Everything starts with the first image you generate, so getting from an idea to an image should feel quick on a small screen. Look at how easy it is to type and adjust a prompt, whether generation settings like image size and quality are clear without digging through menus, and whether the results hold up. A good mobile app reduces friction instead of shrinking a desktop interface onto your phone.

A Wide Choice of Anime Models on Mobile

Once you have a first image, the next question is whether it has the look you wanted, and that depends heavily on the model. An AI image model is the underlying engine that turns your prompt into a picture, and anime models are trained specifically on anime and manga-style art. That's why they handle details like expressive eyes, clean linework, and cel shading better than general image models.

Anime models also differ from one another. Some lean soft and painterly, others produce glossy character portraits, and some follow long, detailed prompts more closely. Switching models is often the quickest way to change a result without rewriting your prompt, so check whether an app offers several anime models and lets you move between them without losing your place.

LoRA Support for Character Consistency on Mobile

A model sets the overall style, but it doesn't know who your character is. Describe the same OC twice, and small details like hair, outfits, or markings can drift between images. That's where LoRAs are key.

On a phone, the question is whether you can find, apply, and adjust them easily, not just whether they exist.

LoRAs take some setup, since you need to find or train the right one. A reference image is often a faster way to show the model what you want, and this is where a phone has a real advantage over a desktop.

Your gallery is usually where your references already live, from saved artwork and screenshots to photos of sketches or real objects. Bringing one into a generation should take only a few taps.

Even a quick snapshot can become part of a scene. The shuttle kept its shape and colors but was redrawn to match the anime style, and it landed in a puddle right in front of Yuzu's lens.

AI Image Editing Without Starting Over

With the right model, a LoRA, or a reference in place, you'll often land on an image that's close but not quite finished. You might want to change an expression, swap an outfit detail, adjust the lighting, or place the same character in a new scene. Regenerating from scratch risks losing what already works, so an app becomes far more useful when you can edit the image you already have.

On a phone, how easy that editing feels decides whether you actually use it. Painting masks or working with layers is fiddly on a small touchscreen, so the most practical editing tools let you describe the change in plain language. It also helps when you can open an edit straight from a result, pull in a photo from your gallery as part of the instruction, and keep refining the new version with a follow-up instead of starting over.

Here's what that looks like in action. We took the rainy street image of Yuzu and moved her into a cafe using a photo taken on the phone and one short instruction.

In this edit, Yuzu, her camera, and the toy shuttle were carried over, while the cafe photo supplied the table, chairs, and wooden slats behind her. The background kept a more photographic look than Yuzu herself, since the edit followed the real photo closely. A second, short instruction was enough to bring the whole scene closer to an anime style.

The cafe edit was refined further.

The follow-up edit gave the background warmer, more illustrated colors and gave Yuzu bolder linework and stronger shading, so she and the cafe now look like part of the same picture. Her camera, coffee cup, and the shuttle stayed in place. Two short instructions took the image from a rainy street to a finished cafe scene without starting over.

Finding and Managing Your AI Anime Art Later

Edits and variations can pile up quickly, and anime projects rarely finish in one sitting. A good app keeps your past generations easy to find, along with the prompts and settings behind them. Being able to reopen an earlier image and continue from there is part of the creative workflow, not housekeeping.

These six checks apply to any anime AI app, so we put the PixAI app through all of them. We ran one connected creation session with Yuzu, where each step built on the last. Everything happened on a phone, with no desktop, no file transfers, and no switching devices partway through.

Step 1: Generate an Anime Character From a Prompt on Mobile

The first thing we did was open the Generate tab and write a detailed prompt covering Yuzu's appearance, outfit, pose, setting, and lighting. Typing a long prompt on a phone takes longer than on a keyboard, but the prompt field expands to full screen, which keeps the text easy to read. Going back to change a single word in the middle of it is still a little fiddly on a touchscreen.

Here's the prompt we used:

Below the prompt, the generation settings sit in a single row with LoRA, Model, Style, Color Palette, and Mode. Each one has an icon and a short label, so it's easy to tell what a control does before opening it. The row also runs past the edge of the screen, so you can scroll sideways to see the rest of the options.

We chose Tsubaki.3, PixAI's newest anime model, in Pro mode. While we were testing, it was still in preview mode.

Most of the description came through. The bleached undercut, ear piercings, and nose stud all appeared, and the crescent moon tattoo landed on the correct forearm, which is impressive for such a small detail. The camera hangs from its red strap, and the carriage has real depth, with sunlight falling across the empty seats.

As a baseline, the app held up well. A polished anime image came together on a phone in one pass, and the layout stayed easy to use from prompt to result.

Step 2: Switch Anime AI Models Without Losing Your Prompt

Next, we wanted to see how much the model changes the look of the same idea. We kept Yuzu's description word for word, changed only the scene to a sunlit flower market with a cat at the far end of the lane, and ran the prompt on Tsubaki.3 and then on Tsubaki.2.

Switching models took only a few taps. Tapping Model in the settings row opens a panel with Preset, Bookmark, and Market tabs, a search bar, and a grid of model thumbnails. Each model is labeled with its architecture and a few tags that describe its strengths. Tsubaki.2, for example, is tagged with Multi-Character, Lighting Control, Dynamic Poses, and Prompt Following, which gives you enough to make a choice without leaving the app.

Your prompt stays in place while you switch, so there's nothing to retype. One thing to watch for is that the settings row changes with the model. Tsubaki.2 shows options like Style, Mode, aspect ratio, Quality, Quantity, and Advanced, while Tsubaki.3 includes LoRA and Color Palette, so switching models can also change which controls you have.

The two results came out quite differently. Tsubaki.3 followed the scene closely, with a long market lane, the cat sitting several meters away on a crate, and shoppers in the distance. Its finish is softer and more illustrated.

Meanwhile, Tsubaki.2 treated the prompt more like a portrait, pulling the cat in beside Yuzu and filling the frame with sunflowers. The image is glossier, and because her face sits larger in the frame, her piercings and tattoo are easier to see.

The cat was an unexpected difference as well. On Tsubaki.2, it sits up and looks straight into the lens, while on Tsubaki.3, it faces away down the lane, which changes what Yuzu is actually photographing.

Neither model is better across the board. Tsubaki.3 suits images where the setting carries the scene, while Tsubaki.2 works well when the character needs to fill the frame. Since switching is quick and the prompt stays put, trying both on a phone is easy enough to do right away instead of saving it for later.

Step 3: Keep Your Character Consistent With a Reference Image

The first two images looked good, but Yuzu was rebuilt from scratch each time, relying on the same long description to bring her details back. That works for one or two images. It gets harder when you want the same character across many scenes without retyping her entire look.

The PixAI app gives you two ways to handle this. One is a LoRA, which you can browse from the settings row using Market, Bookmark, and My LoRA tabs, with up to five slots and labels showing which model architectures each one works with. The catch is that you need to find or train a LoRA for your character first.

The other option is a reference image, and on a phone, that's usually the quicker route, since the image is already in your gallery. We added the train image from Step 1 as a reference in the Edit tab, choosing it straight from the task history. You can also pick images from your phone's gallery, which is handy when you want to take a picture or already have one in mind.

With the reference loaded, the prompt only needed to describe the new scene:

The process was easy to follow, since the reference appears as a thumbnail right above the prompt, so you can see exactly what the model is working from. Even though the prompt never mentioned them, Yuzu's two-tone hair, ear piercings, yellow raincoat, band tee, cargo pants, and chunky boots all carried over. The crescent moon tattoo stayed on the correct forearm, too.

The model also adapted a few things to fit the scene. The camera moved from around her neck to the step beside her, and a bag appeared under her. The unexpected finding was the shop sign, which came out reading "Vinyl Records" with clean, correctly spelled lettering, something generated images often struggle with.

Instead of describing Yuzu from scratch every time, we used an image already on the phone and a one-line prompt to place her in a completely new scene, all in about six taps. It's a clear case for how creating anime art on a mobile can feel practical.

Step 4: Edit Your Anime Art Directly on Mobile

The record shop image was close to finished, so we used it to test how far editing could take an image without starting over. Tapping "Edit" on the result opened it with the image already loaded, so there was nothing to save, find, or rebuild.

Rather than rewriting the whole prompt, we made three separate edits to the same original image, each with a single instruction:

The first two edits were precise. The raincoat turned dark green while Yuzu's face, hair, piercings, camera, bag, and the shop window stayed exactly as they were. The photographs became a stack of record sleeves just as cleanly, complete with artwork printed on the covers.

The lighting edit had a much bigger effect. The warm glow from the shop window gave way to daylight, the shadows changed direction, and the wet pavement picked up bright reflections. It also shifted one character detail, as the bleached section of Yuzu's hair turned closer to silver and spread further across the top.

That difference is useful to understand when you edit. A color or object change only asks the model to touch one part of the picture, so everything around it stays put. A lighting change asks it to redraw most of the scene, which gives smaller character details more room to move.

Editing like this turns one good image into several options without leaving the app. Each change took a single sentence typed on a phone, which makes it easy to explore variations of a scene in a few spare minutes rather than saving that work for a desktop.

Step 5: Find, Reopen, and Continue Past Anime Artwork

Everything so far happened in a single sitting, but real projects rarely work that way. The real test comes after you close the app and want to pick up where you left off.

Past generations live in the Library under Recent Tasks. Each image is saved with the prompt that created it and the time it was made, and a search bar and filter sit at the top. Scrolling back, the whole session was still there, from the first train image through the flower market, the record shop, and all three edits.

Because every image keeps its prompt as a label, telling similar versions apart was easy. You can also switch the grid between two, three, or four columns. Four fits more images on screen, but the thumbnails get small enough that similar results start to blur together, so three worked best for scrolling back through a full session.

When you open an image from the history, you have a range of options.

From this screen, an older image can go straight back into your workflow. You can send it to Edit, bring it into Generate as a starting point, re-roll it, animate it, favorite it, or download it, with the model and prompt still attached underneath.

So could you realistically keep a small anime project going from your phone? Based on this session, yes. Yuzu is still there, along with every version we made, and any one of them can become the starting point for the next session. That's the difference between an anime AI app you generate in and an app you actually work in.

Where an Anime AI Art App Fits Best in Your Routine

Two things stood out across the whole session. We never had to set anything up, and everything we needed, from reference photos to past generations, was already on the phone. That makes mobile creation especially useful in a few specific situations.

Here's a closer look at where an anime AI art app fits into a creator's routine:

  • Catching an Idea Quickly: Inspiration rarely waits until you're at your desk. Our first image of Yuzu took 18 seconds from finished prompt to result, which is fast enough to try an idea on a train ride before it slips away.
  • Building an Original Character: Yuzu moved from a train carriage to a flower market, a record shop, and several edits without a computer involved. A new outfit, setting, or time of day was only a sentence away, so her design could keep developing wherever we were.
  • Working With Images Already on Your Phone: Saved artwork, screenshots, and quick photos are already in your gallery. We turned a train image, a snapshot of a toy shuttle, and a photo of a cafe into parts of new scenes, which is hard to match on a desktop without transferring files first.
  • Changing the Look: When a result is close, but the style feels off, switching models took a few taps and kept the prompt in place. That makes it easy to compare looks on the spot instead of saving it for later.
  • Preparing Social Content: Every result comes with Publish and Download options, so you can review how an image looks on the same screen size where most people will see it once it's posted.
  • Casual Ongoing Creation: Every generation stays in Recent Tasks with its prompt attached, and there's no software to install or hardware to manage. You can work for ten minutes today and continue the same image tomorrow.

The pattern is simple. Using an anime art generator on mobile works best when an idea is small enough to start anywhere and flexible enough to keep changing. You don't need a desk to create a first image, try another version, or carry a character a little further.

When Using a Desktop Beats an AI Image Generator App

Nothing in our session with Yuzu required a computer, but a phone isn't the easiest place for every anime task.

Long prompts are the first sticking point. Yuzu's opening prompt ran to several lines, and while the full-screen field keeps it readable, typing and fixing a word mid-prompt still takes longer on a touchscreen. Comparing results is another. A few images are easy to check side by side, but once you have a dozen close variations, small details get hard to spot on a phone screen.

Larger projects benefit most from a bigger screen. A comic, a multi-character scene, or a batch of assets can involve many references, edits, and versions at once.
