What Domain Investors Registered on .si After 'Super Intelligence'

On 19 September Trump started renaming AI "Super Intelligence". .si, Slovenia's country-code extension, spells SI, and from his first post to 1 October we observed 40,803 newly registered .si domains. Even though this was mostly domain investors at work, what they chose is worth a closer look.

What they registered

The names are shorter and plainer than the .si names registered before the post, almost all letters, with few hyphens or local words, and mostly the .si version of strings already registered in many other extensions: 98.4% were also registered as .com, and 48.5% in more than 50 extensions. Within the wave, single English words came first, and two-word English names grew in the later days.

The short names

The scarcest names, the short ones, were taken along the way: 5,156 three-letter and 524 three-digit .si names from the first post to 1 October, including names that mean something to developers, in chat and on the web.

  • jdk.si, registered 21 September: Java Development Kit
  • otw.si, registered 24 September: on the way
  • 403.si, registered 26 September: HTTP Forbidden
  • 120.si, registered 23 September: the emergency ambulance number in China

Why .si?
