Does Converting AVIF to JPG Reduce Image Quality?

Converting AVIF to JPG can reduce image quality because JPG uses lossy compression. During conversion, the original AVIF image is decoded and then compressed again using the JPG format. Some visual information may therefore be removed, although the difference can be very small when a high-quality JPG setting is used. In many everyday situations, the converted image can still look very similar to the original.

The amount of quality loss mainly depends on the JPG compression level selected during conversion. Higher quality settings generally preserve more detail and produce fewer visible artifacts, but they also create larger files. Lower settings can significantly reduce file size but may cause problems such as blurred details, blocky areas, or reduced sharpness. Choosing a suitable quality level is therefore important when image appearance matters.

The type of image can also affect how noticeable the quality change is. Photographs with natural textures and gradual color changes may hide small compression differences, while images containing text, sharp lines, graphics, or fine patterns can make compression artifacts easier to see. Image dimensions are another consideration, since resizing an image during conversion can cause additional loss of detail.

For the best possible result, convert the original AVIF file directly to JPG and use a high-quality setting when available. Avoid repeatedly converting and saving the same JPG, as additional lossy compression can gradually reduce quality. After conversion, compare the JPG with the original AVIF at the intended display size. This helps you decide whether the selected quality and file size provide the right balance for your website, document, or other use.
