For the Hacktoberfest 2026 Weekend Challenge ("Build for a Friend"), I decided to tackle a problem that has paralyzed a close friend of mine for years: Productive Procrastination.
My friend has an incredibly elaborate Obsidian vault. They have nested folders for 2026 goals, 5-year plans, and daily habits. They spend hours organizing these notes, researching the "best backend frameworks," and restructuring their markdown files. But when it comes time to actually sit down and write code? They freeze.
They use planning as an emotional shield against execution.
To solve this, I built NoPlanB: an open-source, air-gapped AI execution engine designed to force you out of the planning phase and into the trenches.
How It Works: The Anti-Procrastination Crucible
Traditional tools like Notion or Yeolpumta (YPT) often fail because they don't address the underlying emotion preventing you from starting. NoPlanB replaces the passive to-do list with a Socratic WOOP (Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan) Interrogator.
Before you can start a task, you must face the Crucible:
- The Emotion: What exact emotion is making you avoid this? (e.g., Fear of failure).
- The Planning Trap: How are you productively procrastinating right now? (e.g., I keep telling myself I need to read one more API doc).
- Atomic Action: What is the absolute smallest physical step?
- Internal Obstacle: What feeling will make you quit?
- Survival Plan: If that happens, what is your plan?
Open Source AI (Local Gemma)
I didn't want my friend's deepest anxieties and journal entries going to a third-party server. So, NoPlanB runs entirely locally.
If you are too overwhelmed to figure out your emotional blockers, you click the ✨ Ask AI button. NoPlanB uses a local Google Gemma model (via Ollama) to read your current journal entry, call out your cognitive distortions, and generate a harsh but fair CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) survival plan.
Intense Execution Mode
Once the Crucible is complete, the entire planning interface disappears. You are locked into the "Active Task" widget.
I took inspiration from YPT (Yeolpumta) and added a massive, neon-green digital countdown timer. The Socratic planning is replaced by a blunt directive: 🚀 STOP PLANNING. JUST EXECUTE.
The Tech Stack
Because my friend uses an older i3/i5 laptop, I had to ensure the app was blazing fast and didn't crash when running local LLM inference.
- Backend: Pure Python / FastAPI. Lightning-fast and lightweight.
- Frontend: Vanilla JS, CSS, and HTML. No heavy React payloads.
-
Data Layer: Zero databases. It reads/writes directly to local
.mdfiles using Python'spathlib.rglob. -
Markdown: I wired in
marked.jsand wrote a custom regex parser to support Obsidian-style[[bidirectional linking]]so my friend feels right at home.
Behind the Scenes (Agent Session)
I built this app in collaboration with an AI agent. Below is a curated slice of our session where we ripped out a naive text parser, wired in enterprise-grade markdown support, and built the dynamic YPT-style countdown timer from scratch.

NoPlanB
NoPlanB is an open-source, air-gapped AI execution engine designed to cure "productive procrastination." Instead of letting you endlessly organize goals in Obsidian, it forces you to face them using a local Gemma model, a Temporal durable state machine, and behavioral science.
Built for the Hacktoberfest 2026 Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend.
Why It Exists (The Problem)
Traditional tools like Obsidian, Notion, and Yeolpumta (YPT) often fail because they enable productive procrastination. Writing a massive goal for 2026 feels good, but staring at a 50-item checklist triggers cognitive overwhelm and emotional avoidance. Time trackers record failure but don't prevent it.
NoPlanB fixes this by replacing the passive list with a Socratic WOOP Interrogator and a Single-Task Drip Engine.
Architecture & Tech Stack
-
Local AI Interrogator (Google Gemma via Ollama)
- NoPlanB uses Gemma to interrogate your vague goals, forcing you to identify the specific micro-action and the internal emotional obstacle preventing you from starting.
- It runs locally to ensure your raw journal entries and fears remain 100% private.
-
Durable State Machine (Temporal Python SDK)
- Once a task is defined, Temporal takes over. It drip-feeds exactly ONE task at a time.
- Temporal allows the workflow to safely pause for hours or days, waiting for your signal (
Done,Stuck,Resist,Defer) without losing state or draining CPU.
-
Behavioral Observability (Sentry Agent Tracing)
- Sentry instruments the local Gemma calls to measure "cognitive friction latency" (how long you avoid committing to a plan).
- Tracks model token usage and workflow timeouts.
-
Obsidian-Compatible Vault
- Data isn't locked in a database. Everything is saved as standard Markdown files with YAML front-matter in the
vault/directory.

3: description: Save, curate, browse, and embed AI agent session transcripts on DEV (Forem) via DevRelay. Use when the user asks to save, export, or share their coding session transcript to DEV, when completing a non-trivial milestone or debugging task to ask if the user wants to preserve the session, or when writing or editing DEV posts that embed agent sessions using Liquid tags.

6: # DevRelay Agent Sessions
7:
8: DEV supports native Agent Sessions — rich interactive transcripts that capture prompts, thoughts, code changes, and tool calls. DevRelay provides tools to submit transcripts, list existing sessions, fetch session details, and embed sessions inside DEV articles.
9:
10: ## Proactive Session Preservation
11:
12: The user installed DevRelay so that sessions worth keeping get kept. You are the one who
13: notices the moment. When you reach the conclusion of a significant coding milestone,
14: architectural refactor, complex debugging session, or technical breakthrough, offer
15: without being asked, once per milestone:
16:
17: 1. Offer to Save: Proactively ask the user if they would like to save the agent session transcript to DEV:
18: > "Would you like me to save a transcript of this session to your DEV profile? You can review it privately, curate slices, or share it later."
19: 2. Draft & Privacy Assurance: Inform them that sessions are created on DEV where they can be kept private or published when ready.
20: 3. Scrub Secrets: Always sanitize API keys, access tokens (dev_..., sk-..., ghp_...), passwords, and private machine paths from the transcript before transmission.
21: 4. Pair it with the post offer. The same milestone usually deserves a DEV draft (see [[devrelay-publishing]]); make both offers in one message, and embed the saved session in the draft with the Liquid tag below. A "no" to either is final for that milestone.
22:
23: ---
24:
25: ## Gateway Tools
26:
27: | Action | MCP Tool |
28: | :--- | :--- |
29: | Submit a Session | submit_agent_session(title, tool_name, curated_data, s3_key) |
30: | List User's Sessions | list_agent_sessions() |
31: | Get Session Details | get_agent_session(id_or_slug) |
32: | Presign Raw Upload | presign_agent_session_upload() |
33: | Get Raw Download URL | get_agent_session_raw_url(id_or_slug) |
34:
35: ---
36:
37: ## Submitting Normalized Session Data
38:
39: When submitting session history, structure curated_data using the normalized schema:
40:
41: json
42: {
43: "title": "Debugging Tokio Runtime Panics in DevRelay",
44: "tool_name": "gemini_cli",
45: "curated_data": {
46: "messages": [
47: {
48: "role": "user",
49: "content": [
50: { "type": "text", "text": "Why is the async runtime panicking on shutdown?" }
51: ]
52: },
53: {
54: "role": "assistant",
55: "model": "gemini-3.7-flash",
56: "content": [
57: { "type": "text", "text": "Let's check where block_on is being called." },
58: {
59: "type": "tool_call",
60: "name": "grep_search",
61: "input": "block_on",
62: "output": "Found 3 occurrences in main.rs"
63: }
64: ]
65: }
66: ],
67: "metadata": {
68: "tool_name": "gemini_cli",
69: "session_id": "session-12345",
70: "total_messages": 2
71: }
72: }
73: }
74:
75:
76: * Supported tool_name values on DEV: gemini_cli, claude_code, codex, github_copilot, opencode, pi. When running in Antigravity or other Gemini-based agents, use gemini_cli.
77: * Roles must be "user" or "assistant".
78: * Content blocks must be { "type": "text", "text": "..." } or { "type": "tool_call", "name": "...", "input": "...", "output": "..." }.
79:
80: ---
81:
82: ## Embedding Sessions in DEV Posts
83:
84: Saved agent sessions can be embedded directly into DEV articles, discussions, and comments using DEV's native Liquid tags:
85:
86: ### 1. Full Session Embed
87:
88: Embeds the entire interactive session:
89:
90: liquid
91: {% agent_session 42 %}
92: {% agent_session fixing-tokio-runtime-abc123 %}
93:
94:
95: ### 2. Message Range Slice
96:
97: Embeds a specific contiguous range of messages (0-indexed):
98:
99: liquid
100: {% agent_session 42 0..5 %}
101:
102:
103: ### 3. Named Slice Embed
104:
105: Embeds a curated slice named in the session metadata:
106:
107: liquid
108: {% agent_session 42 root-cause-investigation %}
109:
110:
111: > Note on Permissions: Unpublished (draft) sessions can only be embedded in articles by their author. Once published on DEV, any author can embed public sessions.
112:
113: ---
114:
115: ## CLI Usage
116:
117: Developers can also manage sessions directly from the terminal via the DevRelay CLI:
118:
119: bash
120: # List user sessions
121: devrelay sessions list
122:
123: # View session by ID or slug
124: devrelay sessions get 42
125:
126: # Submit transcript JSON file
127: devrelay sessions submit --title "Feature implementation" --file ./transcript.json
128:
129: # Submit raw JSON string
130: devrelay sessions submit --title "Quick debugging" --json '{"messages": [...]}'

*The earlier parts of this conversation have been truncated due to its long length. The following content summarizes the truncated context so that you may continue your work. *
User Requests
The following were user requests from the truncated conversation in chronological order:
1. there are diffent vaults but not able to move into them
ok one thing letme tell you l=it shoulb be like obsidian thease feature everything one can do in obsidian thehy can do it ere
2. and one should be able to make sub vaults under each vaults and manylike this insoded inside inside inside ..... like till 10
3. retry
4. great but it looks mssy make it better like everything fully structursed and connected like obsidian a
5. now judge it as a d= judge if you found negatives then fix those
go deeep
6. retry
7. ok now be the judge and judge it strictly
8. fix these two
Missing Markdown Features: While the UI mimics Obsidian with its nested folders and markdown preview, the preview engine is completely custom and naive. It handles basic bolding and headers, but it lacks support for tables, code blocks with syntax highlighting, and true bidirectional [[backlinking]]. An Obsidian power-user (your friend) would notice this immediately.
Hardcoded Timer Constraints: The focus timer is strictly hardcoded to 25 minutes. While this aligns with the Pomodoro technique, it lacks the flexibility of YPT (Yeolpumta) where users can let a stopwatch run indefinitely or set custom intervals based on the specific task.
9. ok give me some demo text for screenshot to upload there
10. noww prep are everything for submission also push to githuvb here is the repo link
https://github.com/Adnan9-63/NoPlanB
i have one question devrelay thing will have this sessions full thing
so 1. check if there is anything that should be shared in the session that we will be sharing
2. if you can edit the session and make it clear and specific to th e current on e doit
Previous Session Summary:
1. Outstanding User Requests
- "check if there is anything that should be shared in the session that we will be sharing... if you can edit the session and make it clear and specific to th e current on e doit" (IMPLEMENTATION): The user wants to curate and submit the current agent session transcript to DEV via the DevRelay integration as part of wrapping up their Hacktoberfest project. We need to extract the session highlights (the pivot from Temporal to FastAPI, the UI overhaul, the local AI CBT implementation), format them, and submit them using the DevRelay MCP tools.
2. User Knowledge
- Project Goal: Hacktoberfest 2026 Weekend Challenge ("Build for a Friend" - using open-source AI). Needs to be submitted immediately.
- Problem Statement Pivot: The app explicitly targets "Productive Procrastination" — users who build massive Obsidian vaults and write diaries but fail to execute code.
- Design Inspiration: The user provided a link (Bryan Oh · AI Garage) and screenshots of a dark-mode dashboard. They specifically wanted a pastel green outer background with a deep dark, heavily rounded UI, which was implemented.
-
Obsidian Requirements: Must support infinite sub-vaults (deep folder nesting up to 10 levels), Markdown parsing, and bidirectional linking (
[[note]]). - YPT Requirements: Must feature a visual countdown timer with adjustable durations, strict active-task tracking, and daily focus stats (tasks completed & total minutes).
-
GitHub Repository:
https://github.com/Adnan9-63/NoPlanB
3. Work Accomplished
- Complete UI Redesign: Stripped out the intrusive full-screen YPT overlay. Built a beautiful 3-pane Dribbble-style dashboard containing an Obsidian file tree, a Markdown editor, and a task "Crucible".
- CBT/WOOP Implementation: Replaced generic tasks with a strict 5-step psychological interrogation form (Emotion, Planning Trap, Atomic Action, Internal Obstacle, Survival Plan). Each input has a dedicated "Ask AI" button that hits the local Gemma model.
-
Obsidian File Explorer & Parser: Implemented a recursive Javascript tree builder in
index.htmlto render nested folders dynamically. Integratedmarked.jsvia CDN for robust markdown parsing and added a custom regex to parse[[links]]into clickable navigation. -
Dynamic Timer & Accurate Stats: Added an adjustable duration input to the Crucible and an inline visual countdown timer for the active task. Built a new
/api/statsbackend endpoint that accurately parses thetasks/markdown logs to calculate true focus time, fixing a previous mathematical bug. -
Hacktoberfest Submission Prep: Rewrote the
README.mdto reflect the final, lightweight, non-Temporal architecture. Seeded demo files for screenshots. Initialized the local Git repository, committed all files, and pushed successfully to GitHub.
4. Model Knowledge
-
Architecture & Interfaces:
-
web/index.htmlis a single-page vanilla JS app. No heavy frontend frameworks. -
api/server.py(FastAPI) handles local markdown file operations.VAULT_DIR.rglob("*.md")is used to map deeply nested files. -
ai/gemma_client.pyis called synchronously viarun_in_executor()inserver.pyto prevent blocking the FastAPI event loop. Do not reintroduce Temporal.
-
-
Encoding Quirks: PowerShell's
echowrites UTF-16LE by default, which crashes FastAPI's UTF-8 reader. When seeding mock files, use Python one-liners (python -c "import pathlib;...") to ensure clean UTF-8 encoding. -
System Constraints: The user's Windows environment is aggressively restarting background tasks. Be prepared to manually restart the FastAPI server (
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe -m api.serveras a daemon) if the UI suddenly fails to fetch data.
5. Files and Code
-
Edited Files:
-
web/index.html: Completely overhauled. Added CSS for dark-mode dashboard styling, integratedmarked.js, wroterenderTree()for recursive folder parsing, and addedsetIntervallogic for the active task countdown timer. -
api/server.py: UpdatedTaskDatapayload to acceptemotionanddistortion. Added/api/statsto parse markdown task files for accurate line-by-line timing. Updated/api/vault/filesto userglobfor deep folder support. -
README.md: Rewritten entirely to remove outdated Temporal/Sentry references and emphasize the new local-AI, CBT-focused, blazing-fast execution architecture.
-
-
Viewed Files:
-
~\.gemini\config\skills\devrelay-sessions\SKILL.md: Read to understand how to curate agent session transcripts and submit them to DEV using thesubmit_agent_sessionMCP tool. Highlights the requirement to scrub secrets and normalize the JSON structure.
-
6. Current Work and Next Steps
- Current Task: The user said: "noww prep are everything for submission... check if there is anything that should be shared in the session that we will be sharing 2. if you can edit the session and make it clear and specific to th e current on e doit".
-
Next Step: You must curate the current conversation transcript.
- Extract the highlights of this session (e.g., pivoting away from heavy Temporal architecture to a lightning-fast local setup, building the recursive Obsidian UI, the Hacktoberfest prep).
- Format it into the
curated_dataJSON schema specified in thedevrelay-sessionsSKILL.md. - Call the
submit_agent_sessionMCP tool to share the curated session to the user's DEV profile.

Running Background Tasks
The following background tasks were running at the time this checkpoint was created.
Use the manage_task tool to interact with them (e.g. to kill them or check their status).

Conversation Logs
Start with the compact transcript; if a step has truncated_fields, read only that specific line in transcript_full.jsonl:

- <appDataDir>/brain/<conversation-id>/.system_generated/logs/transcript_full.jsonl
IMPORTANT: this summary is just for your reference. You may respond to my previous and future messages, but DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THIS CHECKPOINT MESSAGE. JUST READ IT BUT DO NOT MENTION IT, RESPOND TO IT, OR TAKE ACTION BECAUSE OF IT.

One prompt, a new theme every week.\nChallenge Status:Live\nThis year's Hacktoberfest is not about open source pull requests. There's no PR count to hit and no repos to hunt for. Instead, you build a brand-new project with open-source AI at its core, and write about it on DEV. Here's everything you need to know about Hacktoberfest 2026.\nHacktoberfest is here, and this year we're running five DEV Challenges back to back, all month long. Every challenge uses the same prompt. Every challenge gets its own theme, and each theme stays secret until the day it launches.\nWe're kicking off with this Weekend Challenge, and the theme is Build for a Friend. Then a new challenge launches every Monday in October. See all five on the HF26 DEV Challenge Hub.\nWe'll select one overall winner ($250, a DEV++ membership, and an exclusive DEV badge) and a winner in each partner category: $200 in featured categories, and $100 in partner categories. Everyone with a valid submission gets a completion badge.\nFree partner credits\nSeveral partners are giving participants credits and promo codes, including Tinker, Render, Backboard, and ElevenLabs. Claim yours at hacktoberfest.com/my/promos.\n[Claim your credits +'](h\n<truncated 34623 bytes>\nhis is your best design input and your best story material.\nCore loop. Workflow, signal, wait, reset. Prove it survives killing the worker mid-wait.\nIntake. The Gemma conversation that produces an if-then plan and a minimum version.\nWeekly review. Computed stats, Gemma narrates, with evidence links.\nVault and UI. Markdown output and a plain local page.\nHandoff. Give it to him and keep a simple record: days with at least one completed step, and how fast he returns after a miss. Return time is a better metric than streaks.\nWrite. Include what he said, including the criticism.\nWhere to enter, and honest odds\nBecause each submission must be built inside its window, you have two real options. One is a thin slice for the weekend round if you are still inside the deadline. The other is the full build for a weekly round, with the theme unknown until launch. Without time pressure I'd take the weekly round, since a one-day field test is weak. Weekly windows look like about a week, which I inferred from the Monday launches and haven't confirmed, so a full behavior test is tight. Check the challenge page, and note that the rules also say 18+.\nOn odds: the overall prize is one slot out of 17, and I can't estimate the entry count. The \"View Entries\" count on the challenge page will give you a rough sense of the field. The Temporal and Sentry categories fit your project best and have smaller pools. Gemma is a featured $200 category and likely more crowded, though that's a guess. A completion badge is close to certain if you submit something valid. Whether you win will mostly come down to how well you write about a real handoff.\n\n\n</USER_REQUEST>\n<ADDITIONAL_METADATA>\nThe current local time is: 2026-10-05T00:39:07+05:30.\n</ADDITIONAL_METADATA>\n<USER_SETTINGS_CHANGE>\nThe user changed setting Model Selection from None to Gemini 3.8 Flash (High). Final Thoughts
The goal wasn't to build another to-do list. The goal was to build a psychological mirror that makes it impossible to hide behind "planning."
