Cause of the 500 Internal Server Error

The 500 error occurred when loading the root page (index) because Jinja2Templates was configured with a relative path:

templates = Jinja2Templates(directory="templates")

When uvicorn or python is started from any directory other than d:\W1 (for example, the user home directory or an external terminal path), Jinja looked for ./templates in that current working directory. Because it couldn't locate index.html, it raised:

jinja2.exceptions.TemplateNotFound: 'index.html' not found in search path: 'templates'

Solution

In main.py, the template path is now resolved relative to the file's directory:

from pathlib import Path

BASE_DIR = Path(__file__).resolve().parent

app = FastAPI()
templates = Jinja2Templates(directory=str(BASE_DIR / "templates"))

Verification

Tested loading / from arbitrary working directories (C:\, etc.), and it now reliably returns 200 OK. If your server is running with --reload, it will automatically pick up this change; otherwise, restart your server with:

uvicorn main:app --reload --host [REDACTED] --port 8000

Here are a few realistic SSC CGL mock test examples you can copy and paste into the inputs:

Example 1: Quantitative Aptitude (Time & Work)

Question:
text
A can complete a piece of work in 12 days and B can complete the same work in 18 days. If they work together for 4 days, what fraction of the total work is left?
(A) 4/9
(B) 5/9
(C) 1/3
(D) 2/3

Your Answer / Mistake:
text
Maine option (A) 4/9 mark kiya tha kyunki maine calculate kiya ki 4 din mein 4/9 kaam hua, par question mein pucha tha kitna kaam bacha (left) hai.

Example 2: Reasoning (Coding-Decoding / Alphabet Series)

Question:
text
In a certain code language, if 'SMART' is coded as 'UKCVV', how will 'CLEAN' be coded in that same language?
(A) ENFCP
(B) ENGCO
(C) EMGCP
(D) ENHCO

Your Answer / Mistake:
text
Maine option (B) mark kiya. Maine har letter mein +2 add kiya par 'A' aur 'N' ke shift pattern mein confuse ho gaya.

Example 3: Quantitative Aptitude (Percentages & Profit/Loss)

Question:
text
A shopkeeper marks an article 40% above the cost price and allows a discount of 25% on the marked price. If he sells it for Rs. 840, what was the cost price of the article?
(A) Rs. 750
(B) Rs. 800
(C) Rs. 700
(D) Rs. 820

Your Answer / Mistake:
text
Maine 40% - 25% = 15% seedha profit maan liya aur calculate kiya toh answer match nahi hua. Effective percentage formula lagana bhool gaya.

Example 4: English Comprehension (Error Spotting)

Question:
text
Identify the segment in the sentence which contains a grammatical error:
"Neither the teacher nor the students was present in the auditorium during the morning assembly."
(A) Neither the teacher
(B) nor the students
(C) was present
(D) during the morning assembly

Your Answer / Mistake:
text
Maine no error socha tha kyunki 'Neither...nor' mein maine singular verb 'was' ko correct maan liya, subject-verb agreement rule bhool gaya.

Note: If you haven't started your local Ollama service yet, make sure Ollama is running (ollama run qwen2.5:1.5b) so the backend can generate the Hinglish explanation.

I have switched the application from Ollama to Google Gemini API using the provided key.

Summary of Changes

  1. Integrated Google Gemini API:

    • Updated main.py to use gemini-2.5-flash via Google's Generative Language API endpoint (v1beta).
    • Configured GEMINI_API_KEY with fallback to your key and environment override.
    • Added automatic retry handling for temporary 503/429 spikes.
  2. Cleaned UI:

  3. Verified Working:

    • Tested the /ask endpoint end-to-end; it now returns detailed Hinglish study guidance in real time (HTTP 200).

Try it in your browser:

Refresh http://localhost:8000/ and test with:

  • Question: text A can complete a piece of work in 12 days and B in 18 days. If they work together for 4 days, what fraction of work is left?
  • Your Answer / Mistake: text Maine 4/9 mark kiya, par question mein remaining kaam pucha tha.

Hit Ask Buddy and you will get the response directly from Gemini!

First, let me update the response card in main.py to match the new theme:

Agent
Agent
Agent
Agent

Both files are updated. Now here are the deployment steps:

Step 1 — Create render.yaml in d:\W1\:

Agent

Step 2 — Push to GitHub
bash
git add .
git commit -m "deploy: render + updated UI"
git push

Step 3 — Render Deploy
1. Go to render.com → "New" → Web Service
2. Connect your GitHub repo
3. Render will auto-detect render.yaml
4. In Environment Variables, add:
- Key: GEMINI_API_KEY

- Value: AQ.Ab8RN6JbOC0sJsCvXS_UyKLPlXPthcly4L8PCW7WRkV5fElJ9w
5. Click Deploy — done ✅

Deploy to Vercel (needs a wrapper)

FastAPI doesn't run natively on Vercel without an adapter. Create vercel.json:

Agent

Then:
1. Go to vercel.com → Import GitHub repo
2. Add env var GEMINI_API_KEY in project settings
3. Deploy

Render is simpler for FastAPI — no adapter needed. Use that.

Summary of what changed in UI:

  • Background: warm #f8f5f0 (cream/milk)
  • Cards: pure white with #e3d7c8 borders (warm taupe)
  • Text: deep chocolate #3a271e and #4a382e
  • Accents: muted mocha #8c684e and soft tan #ba9e89
  • Buttons: the submit button is a calm dark chocolate — no gradients, no glow, no shine

Here's a ready-to-use example — just copy and paste:

SSC CGL — Percentage / Profit & Loss

Target Exam: SSC CGL / CHSL

Question:
```
A shopkeeper marks his goods 40% above cost price and gives a discount of 25%.
What is his profit or loss percentage?
(A) 5% profit
(B) 5% loss
(C) 10% profit
(D) 15% loss
```

Your Answer / Mistake:

Maine (A) 5% profit mark kiya tha.
Socha tha ki 40% - 25% = 15% profit hoga,
par option mein 15% nahi tha toh 5% select kar liya.

Or try this — Banking (Syllogism)

Target Exam: Banking (IBPS / SBI)

Question:
```
Statements:
All Cats are Dogs.
Some Dogs are Birds.
Conclusions:
I. Some Cats are Birds.
II. Some Birds are Cats.
(A) Only I follows
(B) Only II follows
(C) Both I and II follow
(D) Neither I nor II follows
```

Your Answer / Mistake:

Maine (C) both follow select kiya tha.
Soch liya ki agar all cats are dogs,
aur some dogs are birds, toh cats bhi birds honge.

Hit the "SSC" or "Bank" sample button on the site — it auto-fills the form instantly without typing anything!

SSC CGL — Percentage / Profit & Loss

Target Exam: SSC CGL / CHSL

Question:
```
A shopkeeper marks his goods 40% above cost price and gives a discount of 25%.
What is his profit or loss percentage?
(A) 5% profit
(B) 5% loss
(C) 10% profit
(D) 15% loss
```

Your Answer / Mistake:

I marked (A) 5% profit. I thought the answer would be
40% - 25% = 15% profit, but since that option wasn't
available I just guessed 5% profit.

Banking — Syllogism

Target Exam: Banking (IBPS / SBI)

Question:
```
Statements:
Conclusions:
I. Some Cats are Birds.
II. Some Birds are Cats.
(A) Only I follows
(B) Only II follows
(C) Both I and II follow
(D) Neither I nor II follows
```

Your Answer / Mistake:

I selected (C) Both follow. My reasoning was that since
All Cats are Dogs and Some Dogs are Birds,
some Cats must also be Birds.

UPSC — Indian Polity

Target Exam: UPSC / State PSC

Question:
```
Which of the following writs can be issued by the Supreme Court
to enforce a Fundamental Right?
  1. Habeas Corpus
  2. Mandamus
  3. Quo Warranto
(A) 1 and 2 only
(B) 1 and 3 only
(C) 2 and 3 only
(D) 1, 2 and 3
```

Your Answer / Mistake:

I marked (A) 1 and 2 only. I was not sure whether
Quo Warranto is related to Fundamental Rights or
only to public offices, so I left it out.

You've hit the free tier daily limit of gemini-2.5-flash — 20 requests/day per API key. This is a Google restriction, not a code bug.

You have 3 options:

Option 1 — Get a New Free API Key (Easiest)

  1. Go to aistudio.google.com/app/apikey
  2. Click "Create API Key"
  3. Open main.py line 28 and replace the key: python GEMINI_API_KEY = os.getenv("GEMINI_API_KEY", "YOUR_NEW_KEY_HERE")

Option 2 — Switch to gemini-1.5-flash (Higher Free Quota)

gemini-1.5-flash has a much higher free tier: 1500 requests/day.

Change line 29 in main.py:
```python
Change this line:
GEMINI_MODEL = os.getenv("GEMINI_MODEL", "gemini-2.5-flash")
To this:
GEMINI_MODEL = os.getenv("GEMINI_MODEL", "gemini-1.5-flash")
```

Option 3 — Wait Until Tomorrow

The quota resets every 24 hours at midnight UTC. Since you're in IST (+5:30), it resets at 5:30 AM IST.

Recommendation: Do Option 1 + Option 2 together — new key with gemini-1.5-flash = 1500 free requests/day, more than enough for daily study use.

gemini-1.5-flash isn't available on this API key's version. From earlier tests, gemini-2.5-flash is the correct working model. Just change it back:

Agent

Done. Your new key + gemini-2.5-flash is now set.

The new API key gives you a fresh 20 requests/day quota. If uvicorn is running with --reload, it will pick this up automatically — no restart needed. Try submitting your question again.

Note: The free tier for gemini-2.5-flash is 20 req/day. If you need more, go to aistudio.google.com and create additional project API keys — each project gets its own 20/day quota.

Both your API keys have hit the 20 req/day limit. Let me fix the code to automatically read the retry delay from the API response and wait, then retry — so you don't see this error anymore:

Agent
Agent

The code now handles this properly. But the real issue is your daily quota is fully used up. The code can't fix that — only a new key can.

What to do right now:

1. Go to: aistudio.google.com/app/apikey

2. Click "Create API key" → "Create API key in new project"
(The "new project" part is important — each project has its own 20/day quota)

3. Paste the new key in main.py line 27:
python
GEMINI_API_KEY = os.getenv("GEMINI_API_KEY", "PASTE_NEW_KEY_HERE")

4. If uvicorn is running with --reload, it picks up the change automatically. Done.

Going forward, the app will auto-wait the exact retry delay (e.g. 25s) on rate-limit errors and retry once before showing the quota message.

All the old model names (gemini-1.5/2.0/2.5) are returning 404 on this new key — it only has access to the newer gemini-3.x series. Let me update the fallback list:

Agent

Done. The app will now try 11 models in order — covering both old and new API key types. Submit again and it will find the right one automatically.

Note on loading time: Since it tries models one by one on first attempt, it may take 5–10 seconds longer than usual while it finds the first working model. After that, subsequent requests go directly to the working model (within the same server session).

If it still fails, please share what's shown — it'll help narrow down exactly which models your key has access to.

Here is the draft for your Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge DEV post! You can copy this directly into your DEV.to editor.

Agent

I've drafted the DEV submission post into a markdown artifact for you!

You can view it here: hacktoberfest_submission_draft.md

It perfectly covers the problem the Universal Exam Study Buddy solves, explains your tech stack (FastAPI + Tailwind + Gemini fallback chains), and answers the prompt for the "Build for a Friend" challenge. Just fill in the demo and repo links before you hit publish on DEV!

I've prepared your entire coding session for DevRelay!

However, it looks like your DevRelay CLI isn't logged in yet. To upload the session to your DEV.to account, please follow these two steps:

1. Log in to DevRelay:
Open your terminal and run:
bash
devrelay --login

(This will open a browser window for you to securely authenticate.)

2. Submit the session:
Once logged in, I've already extracted and formatted our entire session into a file called session_data.json in your project folder. Run this command to submit it:
bash
devrelay sessions submit --title "Building Universal Exam Study Buddy" --file session_data.json

It will give you a Session ID (something like building-universal-exam-abc123).

3. Add the tag to your DEV Post:
Grab that ID and replace the placeholder in your DEV post draft that I created earlier:

{% agent_session building-universal-exam-abc123 %}

Let me know once you've published it or if you want help generating more DEV posts for other projects!
