Most "responsive" sites are desktop layouts squeezed into media queries. Here's the build checklist we run at aimEncoders to ship genuinely mobile-first frontends.
1. Write base styles for mobile, enhance with min-width
Your unguarded CSS should be the phone layout. Every min-width media query is a progressive enhancement, never a repair. If you find yourself writing max-width overrides to fix the desktop design on phones, the cascade is backwards.
2. Use fluid type and spacing
clamp() for type scale, relative units for spacing, and container query units where components need independence from viewport. Hardcoded pixel values at desktop sizes are where mobile layouts go to die.
3. Responsive images are a build step, not an afterthought
srcset + sizes on every content image, modern formats (WebP/AVIF) with fallbacks, loading="lazy" below the fold, and explicit width/height (or aspect-ratio) to kill layout shift. Our audits still find 2MB+ hero images served to phones — automate this in your pipeline or it won't happen.
4. Design for thumbs in CSS, not just in Figma
Minimum 48px touch targets, adequate spacing between adjacent tappables, and sticky CTAs positioned in the thumb zone. Test with pointer: coarse media queries where behavior should differ for touch.
5. Budget performance on mobile networks
Set a mobile JavaScript budget (we keep ours lean and audit with Lighthouse mobile throttling, not desktop), defer non-critical JS, and verify LCP on simulated 4G — office Wi-Fi lies to you.
6. Content parity is a QA item
Before merge, diff the mobile and desktop DOM for content, headings, and structured data. Google's mobile-first indexing means the phone DOM is the canonical one — our Playwright + CI pipeline runs these checks automatically on every build.
7. Test on real devices
Emulators catch layout breaks; they don't catch how a form feels under a real thumb. We verify on physical phones before sign-off. Your users aren't browsing in DevTools.
