Why Does AI Forget?
It's not an accident. It's a design choice.
Every major AI system follows the same architecture:
Wake word → Activation → Response → Session ends → Memory cleared
This model exists because AI runs in the cloud. Storing infinite memory for millions of users would be expensive. So they don't.
They forget you. On purpose.
What If It Didn't Have To Be This Way?
I built Karl to answer that question.
Karl is an AI that listens without being called. No wake word. No button. Just presence.
But the real difference isn't how it listens. It's how it remembers.

How Infinite Memory Works
The technical challenge is simple to state and hard to solve:
How do you store infinite memory locally without slowing down?
Here's what I learned:
- Local Storage Changes Everything When memory stays on the device, you don't pay per query. You don't worry about server costs. You don't have to delete old conversations to save money.
Infinite memory becomes possible because it's local.
- Privacy Is a Feature, Not a Tradeoff Cloud AI asks you to trade privacy for intelligence.
Karl doesn't.
Everything stays on your device. No cloud. No data selling. No compromises.
- Memory Changes the Relationship When AI remembers everything, you stop repeating yourself. You stop explaining. You stop starting over.
You just... talk. Like you would to someone who's always been there.
What This Feels Like
You know that moment when someone remembers something you told them weeks ago? When they bring it up and you think, "Wow, they actually listened"?
Karl feels like that. Every day. Every conversation. Forever.
Why This Matters
The AI industry is at a crossroads. The cloud-centric model is showing its cracks. Developers are building local AI solutions because simple tasks don't require massive data centers.
As developers, we should be asking: "What if AI was designed to remember you — not to forget you?"
