Underrated projects that help for De-googling

Digital Wellness Isn't Just About Your Data — It's Also About Your Eyes

Digital wellness extends beyond screen time and privacy—it includes how we train our visual system.

A recent highlight of underrated degoogling tools shows how individuals can reclaim control over their data: privacy-first app stores, open-source alternatives, community-driven app finders. The throughline isn't nostalgia for the pre-cloud era. It's agency—the idea that defaults are not destiny, and that the tools you use should serve your goals, not someone else's business model.

The same logic applies to how we treat our eyes.

Amblyotube, developed by Seven Sports for Meta Quest (Quest 2, 3, Pro, 3S), applies that principle to visual coordination. Because VR headsets have two independent eyepieces, the app can send a different visual feed to each eye at the same time. In practice, that means any YouTube video becomes a dichoptic training session:

  • Dominant Eye Shader: an adjustable blur, contrast, or opacity filter places the stronger eye in a "digital timeout"—partial transparency by default, full digital patching at 100% opacity.
  • Lazy Eye Sharpener (MFBF mode): an AI engine detects human figures and selectively sharpens them in the weaker eye's view, with optional red outlines, yellow-green highlights, and a pulsing flicker.
  • Magenta Focus Cue: a moving magenta marker in the lazy eye pairs with a subtle grey dot in the dominant eye, prompting the brain to fuse both signals—practicing binocular fusion and depth perception.
  • Setup: users select the affected eye (left or right) and a severity preset (Mild, Moderate, Severe), or run the built-in LogMAR vision check to auto-tune the therapy profile.

Recommended use is 30–40 minutes daily, with a strict maximum of one hour per session. No adhesive patches. No red-blue glasses. Just content you already enjoy.

For teams thinking about wellness programs, accessibility, or the next wave of assistive software, this is the pattern worth watching: give people control, keep the feedback loop visible, and remove the friction that kills adherence.

Amblyotube is a supplementary vision training and assistive tool, not a medical device, and does not replace professional care.
