A Mac may contain more USB devices than expected.

USB 2.0, USB 3.0, or USB 3.1?
A USB-C connector alone does not tell you which protocol or speed a device is using.
Depending on the device, cable, adapter, hub, and Mac, the negotiated connection may be:
- USB 2.0 at 480 Mbit/s
- USB 3.0 at 5 Gbit/s

Identify the Exact Device

A physical drive is not the same thing as a volume shown in Finder.
One external drive may contain:
- a physical media device
- an APFS container

Select the physical drive to inspect information such as capacity, write status, removability, media name, protocol, and BSD device name. Expand it in the sidebar to see its containers and mounted volumes.
