It's natural for software developers to feel like they're ready to take on more responsibility, or become a leader, after they've achieved a level of comfort and success. And if we only measure by past achievements, or by technical skillsets, it might be easy to tell if someone is ready for more in their role.
But there is a bigger factor in determining how well you'll take on your next role and that is your ability to be coached. Your ability to be coached is not only useful for the first years of your career, but in fact it is a key indicator to how successful you will be in all of your roles in the future.
Many of us forget that when we climb the career ladder, each new rung places us back in the beginners seat. And if we treat that as an opportunity to learn and grow, we'll find greater success. Being coachable is the best quality you can have no matter where you are in your career, but especially as you grow into bigger and better opportunities.
